ORONO, Maine - Junior co-captain Ryan Greene and sophomore Doug Grimes scored third-period goals to get BU back within two, but the No. 11/13 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell at No. 7 Maine, 5-2, on Friday night at Alfond Arena.
BU (5-5-0, 2-2-0 HE) never quit despite facing a 4-0 deficit, with Greene notching a power-play goal early in the third period and Grimes collecting his first goal of the season midway through the third. The Terriers never got closer, however, as Maine (7-2-1, 4-2-1 HE) added an empty-netter to seal the victory.
Sophomore co-captain Shane Lachance and freshman Cole Eiserman assisted on Greene's goal while seniors Matt Copponi and Tristan Amonte had the helpers on Grimes' goal. Sophomore Max Lacroix made a career-high 29 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maine opened the scoring just 5:12 into the proceedings for the only goal of the first period.
- The Black Bears doubled their lead at the 3:17 mark of the second period.
- Lacroix made a terrific save on a breakaway to keep the deficit at 2-0, but Maine scored two 5-on-3 power-play goals, including one with 0.1 on the clock, to take a 4-0 lead into the final frame.
- Two quick Black Bear penalties gave BU an early 5-on-3 power play and Greene cashed in at the left post for his fourth goal of the season.,
- Lacroix made another breakaway stop with his blocker early in the third to keep the Terriers in striking distance.
- Grimes then cut the deficit to 4-2 with 10:59 remaining in regulation. Copponi skated through the neutral zone, gained the zone and sent a nifty backhand pass to Grimes on the right side. Grimes had time and space to uncork a shot past Albin Boija (23 saves).
- The Terriers continued to press for an equalizer, but the Black Bears quelled any chance of a comeback with an empty-net goal at 18:18.
