Sjöberg Wins Title, Terriers Finish Second at Patriot League Cross Country Championships

November 2, 2024

EASTON, Pa. — Junior Vera Sjöberg won the 2024 Patriot League Women's Cross Country Championship by over 30 seconds Saturday afternoon as the Boston University women's cross country team took second place on the course at Lafayette College. The Terriers' top five runners all finished in the top 14 places and earned a team score of 36 points while all five earning All-Patriot League honors. The men's team finished third as they posted a score of 97 points.

The Terriers' 36 points is the best score at the Patriot League Championships in program history and was just two points behind the champions, Army West Point.

Sjöberg got the lead early and never looked back, increasing the distance between her and the runner-up from Army West Point at each kilometer mark. She ultimately finished in 19:45.9, a new personal-best for the Stockholm, Sweden native. That performance earned her Patriot League Outstanding Performer of the Meet for the first time in her career. Following Sjöberg was sophomore Ola Szulska, who finished in 20:51.5 and taking fifth place overall. Then senior Daisy Liljegren, who had not raced since Fall 2023, made her season debut and came in seventh with a time of 20:59.8. Rounding out the top five were sophomore Adrienne Buettner-Cable with a 21:03.3 run and a 9th-place finish, while freshman Caroline Collins took 14th and crossed the line at 21:13.7.

As the top freshman finisher, Collins also earned a major award from the Patriot League, taking Outstanding Rookie of the Meet honors. Sjöberg, Szulska and Liljegren notched First Team All-Patriot League nods and Buettner-Cable and Collins both earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors.

On the men's side, graduate student Alex Brown was the top finisher with a 17th-place finish in 24:21.1. Sophomore Moritz Ebbeskotte crossed the line next, finishing in 24:27.5 and taking 20th place. Next was sophomore Karsen Vesty, who came in 23rd with a 24:35.9 time, and rounding out the scoring five were junior Parker Schneider (24:35.9, 24th place) and freshman Daniel Hruska (24:37.0, 26th place).

Next, both squads will run at the NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regional in Hopkinton, New Hampshire on Friday, Nov. 14.
