Men's Basketball Opens Homestand with Sacred Heart Sunday Afternoon

BOSTON – Seeking its first three-game win streak of the season, the Boston University men's basketball team will start off a three-game homestand by welcoming Sacred Heart to Case Gym Sunday at 4 p.m.

The contest is part of a doubleheader with the BU women's basketball team first hosting Rider at 1 p.m. Both opponents are members of the MAAC with the Pioneers in their first year after departing the Northeast Conference this past summer.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU is seeing its first action in a week following a 2-0 performance at the UMBC Multi-Team Event, which featured a 75-71 win over the host Retrievers and then a 69-62 victory against two-time defending MEAC champion Howard.
  • The Terriers are 1-2 at home with 78-50 win over a Dartmouth squad that claimed an 88-83 win at Boston College on Friday. BU came up just short to defending NEC champion Wagner, 60-58, and fell to Northeastern, 80-72.
  • Sophomore Kyrone Alexander leads the Terriers in scoring at 11.1 ppg and in assists at 1.9 apg with senior Miles Brewster close behind at 9.7 ppg and 1.6 apg alongside a team-high 1.6 spg.
  • Senior Malcolm Chimezie (7.7 ppg) has made his presence felt in the paint with a team-high 6.4 rpg and five blocks while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.
  • Freshman Azmar Abdullah (7.0 ppg) is the reigning PL Rookie of the Week after tallying 21 points against Howard and has combined with senior Ben Palacios for 19 3-pointers and 51.4 3FG%.
  • BU is averaging 64.6 ppg and 41.8 FG% while holding opponents to 66.9 ppg and 42.9 FG%.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
  • The Pioneers are seeing their first action since posting a 67-54 home win vs. Central Connecticut State back on Nov. 21. 
  • SHU is seeking its first true road win with an 0-4 mark following losses at Dartmouth (81-76) and at Brown (89-70). The other two losses occurred at UConn (92-56) and Temple (81-70).
  • The Pioneers are facing their second Patriot League opponent after falling to Holy Cross, 82-75, in a three-game tournament hosted by Brown that also included SHU's 80-63 win over New Hampshire.
  • SHU has three men averaging double figures in points with Anquan Hill (12.3 ppg) edging Tanner Thomas (12.2 ppg). Amiri Stewart is the third Pioneer at 11.4 ppg while adding a team-high 13 steals alongside six blocks.
  • Bryce Johnson (8.6 ppg) leads the Pioneers in rebounding at 6.6 rpg.
  • SHU is averaging 70.6 ppg and 42.6 FG% while holding opponents to 77.4 ppg and 46.6 FG%
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU won the first-ever meeting between the two programs last season at the Pitt Center in Connecticut, 70-49.
  • The Terriers nearly doubled SHU in made 3-pointers, 11-6, and also posted a 15-7 advantage in made free throws, 15-7.
  • Sophomore Matai Baptiste led BU with a team-high 12 points, as the Terriers finished the contest shooting 40.0 FG% while holding the Pioneers to 35.3 FG%.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Terriers will remain home and host former America East foe UAlbany on Saturday (Dec. 7) at 1 p.m.
  • The Great Danes claimed an 86-72 victory in New York last season to cut BU's series lead to 20-10.
