Four Terriers to Skate for United States at 4 Nations Face-Off
December 5, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Four former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts were named to the United States' roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off, USA Hockey announced on Wednesday.
Jack Eichel and Charlie McAvoy were two of the six skaters initially named to the roster in June, with Jake Oettinger and Brady Tkachuk joining them. All four are enjoying terrific seasons for their respective NHL clubs.
Eichel, an assistant captain with the Vegas Golden Knights, is tied for first in the NHL with 30 assists and is fourth in the league with 38 points, just one behind the three leaders. He has helped lead Vegas to first place in the Pacific Division as of Thursday morning. McAvoy, an assistant captain for the Boston Bruins, has totaled 10 points on five goals and five assists. He also leads all Bruins defensemen in plus-minus and is a plus-6 over his last three games.
Oettinger is 13-5-0 with a 2.41 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage for the Dallas Stars this year. Only one other goaltender has more wins than Oettinger this season, who is seventh among qualifying goalies in goals-against average. Tkachuk, captain of the Ottawa Senators, leads his team with 14 goals and is second on the squad with 28 points. He is currently on a five-game point streak.
BU won't just be represented on the ice, as Pittsburgh Penguins bench boss Mike Sullivan will serve as head coach of the United States at the tournament, which will take place Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and in Boston. In addition, Minnesota Wild head coach John Hynts and Penguins assistant David Quinn will be on Sullivan's coaching staff, while the management team includes New York Rangers president/GM Chris Drury and Minnesota Wild assistant GM Chris Kelleher.
