Terriers Drop Overtime Contest To Greyhounds, 70-65

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior Caitlin Weimar posted a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double, and freshman Aoibhe Gormley scored a career-high 15 points, but the Boston University women's basketball team fell to Loyola Maryland in overtime, 70-65, on Saturday evening at Reitz Arena.

BU (16-10, 8-7 PL) led by as many as 12 points, and was up nine at halftime. However, the Greyhounds (14-12, 9-6 PL) tied the game with 9.2 seconds remaining, and forced the Terriers to shoot 0-for-9 in the extra frame.

As of writing, BU moves into a tie for third place with Army West Point and Colgate in the Patriot League standings.

Weimar added five blocks with her 16th double-double of the year. Gormley made 10-of-12 from the free throw line while adding seven assists. Junior Alex Giannaros added 12 points with a trio of three-pointers.

Kimmie Hicks dropped a game-high 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Laura Salmerón racked up 16 points and five assists. Lex Therien recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers scored the game's first nine points in the opening 4:03, forcing the Greyhounds to call timeout in the first. Freshman Audrey Ericksen canned a corner three, while Weimar had four points on two layups by the left block.
  • Loyola Maryland didn't make its first jumper until the 3:43 mark of the first, but Weimar's free throw and then another layup extended the Terrier edge to 16-4.
  • BU was held scoreless for the next 4:35 until Giannaros canned a corner three one minute into the second quarter, making it 19-9 Terriers.
  • Senior Sophie Beneventine's and-one with 7:14 on the clock pushed the lead to 22-11, but a 5-0 run that featured Hicks' own three-point play cut the gap to six. Giannaros then drained a transition three to stop the spurt.
  • Hicks drained a three with 1:48 until halftime before Gormley knocked down two foul shots, and freshman Inés Monteagudo Pardo collected a loose ball to convert a eurostep layup for a 34-23 Terrier advantage.
  • Ahead 34-25 at the break, Weimar sank BU's first field goal of the second half 1:52 into the third quarter with a layup to her left past Therien, making it 36-28 Terriers.
  • Weimar corralled a Gormley pass for a turnaround hook shot to bring the lead up to nine, but three jumpers from the Greyhounds brought the home side within 40-37 with 3:41 remaining in the stanza.
  • Gormley and Weimar connected on another layup for the senior on the next possession to halt the drought, but that was the final Terrier field goal of the frame. BU led 46-43 entering the fourth quarter.
  • Loyola trailed by one on multiple possessions, including after Therien's layup with 7:35 remaining, but Giannaros answered that bucket with a triple that restored the BU lead to 51-47.
  • Halfway through the fourth, Salmerón nailed a step-back jumper, but Gormley drilled a straightaway triple before the shot clock expired to push the gap to 54-59 in BU's favor.
  • Salmerón converted a pull-up on the next play, then Kelly Ratigan's triple knotted the game at 54-54 with 4:14 on the clock, the first tie since the opening tip.
  • Hicks gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game with 2:07 remaining in regulation, but Monteagudo delivered a corner three with under 46 seconds left to replenish a one-point lead for the Terriers, 59-58.
  • Monteagudo went 1-of-2 from the foul line with 21.4 seconds on the timer, but Therien was fouled on the next Loyola possession with 9.2 ticks to go. She made both free throws to level the score at 60-60. Gormley's right-elbow jumper before the buzzer was off the mark.
  • Weimar made one foul shot to open the extra stanza, but Ratigan's three ignited a 7-0 Greyhound run to give them a 67-61 lead.
  • Beneventine nailed a pair of free throws, then the BU defense forced a five-second violation to regain possession. Gormley's two foul shots cut the deficit to 67-65.
  • Salmerón hit two free throws, and Monteagudo couldn't connect on a three to seal the result.
