Kyrone Alexander's career-high 23 points and senior
Anthony Morales' go-ahead layup with 11.3 seconds remaining, the Boston University men's basketball team pulled out a thrilling 82-79 overtime victory over Loyola Maryland Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
With their season-high three-game win streak, the Terriers (13-16, 8-8 PL) are now at .500 in Patriot League play for the first time since opening at 2-2. The Greyhounds (6-23, 4-12 PL) entered the contest with four road conference wins and looked to claim another before the buzzer sounded, but Alexander stepped up by blocking a driving layup attempt to help seal the BU victory.
In a contest featuring 14 lead changes and eight ties, Alexander went 7-of-15 from the field and 7-of-9 at the charity stripe while adding a personal-best eight rebounds alongside two assists and two steals. Dishing out five assists, senior
Miles Brewster netted 14 points, and junior
Ethan Okwuosa reached double figures as well with 12 points.
Jordan Stiemke matched Alexander's 23 points but did his damage from behind the arc, shooting 5-of-10. Alonso Faure totaled 16 points and seven rebounds, while Milos Ilic recorded 13 points. David Brown III added 16 points alongside seven rebounds, and Golden Dike recorded six assists with five boards.
OVERTIME
- After the teams exchanged 3-pointers in the final 2.1 seconds of regulation and then a made free throw to start overtime, Alexander and Morales both netted jumpers to grab a 78-74 lead with 1:43 remaining.
- The Greyhounds though came back with Commander flushing a 3-pointer and Stiemke driving to the hoop for a layup and 79-78 advantage at 33 seconds.
- BU called a timeout, and Morales scored along the baseline with a tightly-contested layup to retake the lead with 11.3 seconds left.
- Loyola immediately brought the ball up the court and Stiemke drove again to the hoop, but this time, Alexander was in position to swat the shot off the glass and corral the rebound while being fouled.
- Alexander hit both free throws at 0.8 seconds, and the defense deflected the long inbounds pass from the Greyhounds to seal the victory.
THE SETUP
- The first 12 minutes of the game featured four lead changes and ties with freshman Matai Baptiste flushing a 3-pointer at 8:16 to grab a 21-18 advantage.
- With a 29-24 lead, Brewster converted on his own steal with a layup to spark a 14-3 run capped by Okwuosa's layup at 18 seconds to pull ahead, 43-27.
- After Stiemke ended the first half with a jumper, sophomore Nico Nobili started the second with a 3-pointer to grab BU's largest lead, 46-29.
- The Terriers though missed their next nine shots, and the Greyhounds took advantage with an 18-0 run behind a pair of Stiemke treys and four Ilic buckets in the paint.
- Faure took advantage of his own steal with a slam dunk at 12:52 and responded to Brewster's jumper with another dunk at 11:59 to retake the lead, 49-48.
- Brown scored from behind the arc to grab the Greyhounds' largest lead, 58-52, at 8:59, and Garrett Brennan added another in response to Brewster's trey to maintain the six-point advantage.
- BU clawed its way back with Alexander flushing a 3-pointer on the next possession and Baptiste adding another at 5:50 to pull back ahead, 63-61.
- Nobili's free throw at 1:23 in regulation gave BU a 68-64 lead, but Stiemke came right back with a 3-pointer.
- On BU's next possession, Alexander scored on his own missed layup attempt with the foul but missed his free throw attempt.
- Stiemke duplicated Alexander's effort with an identical putback and added the free throw to tie the game, 70-70.
- Alexander then netted a clutch 3-pointer at 2.1 seconds, but the Greyhounds threw a long inbounds pass to Faure, who banked off the glass a long trey to send the game to OT.
GAME NOTES
- Competing in its first overtime game of the season, BU improved to 7-6 at home and 3-10 on the year when finishing behind in 3-pointers (10-7).
- Alexander became the fifth Terrier to score 20+ points in a game after BU went the entire non-conference portion of the schedule without a 20-point scorer.
- The Terriers outscored Loyola off turnovers, 26-8, in the paint, 43-32, and in second-chance opportunities, 14-10.
- BU went 13-of-18 (.722) at the charity stripe, while the Greyhounds went 13-of-25 (.520).
- BU improved to 19-7 all-time in the series against Loyola, having won the last six meetings and nine of the previous 10.
UP NEXT
- With two games remaining, the Terriers will next visit Lehigh on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at 6 p.m.
- Down by as many as 15 early in the second half, Brewster hit a pair of free throws with 4.2 seconds left to claim a 72-71 come-from-behind win at home back on Feb. 3.
- Freshman Michael McNair totaled a career and game-high 21 points.
