Women’s Track & Field Places Second at Patriot League Championships

BOSTON – The Boston University women's track & field team took second at the Patriot League Championships with a score of 148. Overall, the program brought home 10 individual titles with four on the men's side and six on the women's side.
 
Navy won the meet on both sides with the men scoring 242.5 points and the women scoring 188. Army West Point took second on the men's side with 152.5 points.
 
Major Awards
  • Sophomore Vera Sjöberg was awarded the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet and the Highest Points Scorer awards after her gold medals in the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m helped her score 30 points.
  • Sophomore Peace Omonzane was selected as the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet after winning gold in the long and triple jumps and setting the meet record in the triple.
 
Top Dogs
  • Sjöberg won the gold in the mile (4:44.83) and followed with gold in the 3,000m (9:32.05) to sweep the individual distance events, becoming the first Terrier to do so since joining the Patriot League.
  • Graduate student Foster Malleck led the pack in the mile, running 4:11.19 for the gold.
  • Omonzane swept the horizontal jumps with a gold medal in the triple jump (12.79m (41' 11.5").
  • Sophomore Freddy Collins claimed gold in the 3,000m with a time of 8:02.00 to break the meet record and set the tenth-best mark in BU history.
  • Junior Steven Franco scored 5,088 in the heptathlon to earn the gold medal and reach the podium for the second indoor season in a row.
 
Podium Appearances
  • Senior Dakota Jackson ran 8.61 in the 60m dash to place second in the event.
  • Senior Uchenna Nwosu finished the 60m hurdles in 8.07 to place third.
  • Malleck also made the podium in the 3,000m with a third-place time of 8:06.99.
  • Sophomore Kate Edenson finished the 800m in 2:09.94 to take home second place.
  • Junior Emma Lawrence took second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.97m (39' 3.25").
  • Malleck, freshmen Daniel Demonte, Shamiso Sikaneta and sophomore Parker Schneider ran 9:53.09 in the distance medley relay to take second with the third-best time in BU history.
  • Freshman Adrienne Buettner-Cable, Edenson, sophomore Lily Borin and junior Alex Vellekoop finished the distance medley relay in 11:47.82 to take second and set the fourth-best time in BU history.
 
Top 10 Terriers
  • In the women's shot put, sophomore Madison Sorrell threw for 13.07m (42' 10.75") to set the ninth-best mark in BU history.
