Lehigh Eliminates Men's Basketball in Overtime, 84-79

BOSTON – Despite senior Anthony Morales tallying a career-high 27 points, the No. 2 seeded Boston University men's basketball team suffered heartbreak in an 84-79 overtime loss to No. 6 Lehigh in the Patriot League semifinals on Sunday evening at Case Gym.

The Terriers (16-17) went 16-of-31 (.516) from behind the arc, finishing two shy of tying the program record for made 3-pointers, but also shot 11-of-21 (.524) at the charity stripe to get eliminated in overtime for the third straight season. The Mountain Hawks (14-17) drained 12 3-pointers alongside 24 free throws off 30 attempts (.800) to pull out the come-from-behind win and earn a PL title game trip to No. 1 Colgate Wednesday night . BU led by as many as 21 late in the first half and was later down by six with under three minutes remaining in regulation before rallying to force an overtime won by Lehigh's 8-of-9 performance at the free throw line.

Hitting the most 3-pointers by a Terrier on 7-of-12 shooting since Cedric Hankerson ('18) flushed 10 treys at Syracuse off 20 attempts in 2017, Morales totaled a program season high in points alongside six rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Kyrone Alexander was the second Terrier in double figures at 18 points, netting all four made field goals in 3-point territory. Sophomore Nico Nobili was the closest to a double-double at eight points and nine boards.

Cam Gillus led Lehigh with 30 points in part due to six 3-pointers, while adding three assists and three steals. Tyler Whitney-Sidney was held to just 1-of-5 from behind the arc but compensated by shooting 10-of-11 at the free throw line en route to 21 points. Keith Higgins Jr. came off the bench with 11 points, and Burke Chebuhar added a game-high 10 rebounds with five points.

OVERTIME
  • After senior Miles Brewster hit one of two free throws with three seconds remaining to force overtime, Gillus started the extra session netting both of his attempts.
  • Higgins extended Lehigh's lead to 76-72, but Brewster responded with a layup and then a nice pass to set up Nobili's own layup that drew a defensive foul.
  • After missing the free throw and earning a defensive stop, BU turned the ball back over with the score still tied at 1:27.
  • Whitney-Sidney netted a jumper on the ensuing possession and added a hook shot at the 18-second mark for an 80-76 advantage.
  • He followed up by drawing an offensive foul and hit all four free throw attempts in the final 10 seconds to seal the victory.
THE SETUP
  • BU had a standout first half, shooting 55.6 percent from the field and an even-better 57.9 percent in 3-point territory.
  • Alexander opened the contest on a 3-pointer and freshman Michael McNair added BU's fourth at 13:55 to grab an 18-5 lead.
  • Morales extended the lead to 37-17 with 5:59 remaining on another 3-pointer, and McNair hit a free throw to pull ahead, 43-22.
  • Brewster added the Terriers' 11th trey of the half on BU's final possession, but in a sign of things to come, Gillus drained one in response to beat the buzzer to cut the lead to 46-28 entering the locker room.
  • Alexander flushed BU's first 3-pointer of the second half at 18:10 for a 49-30 advantage that was cut to 49-42 on Higgins' free throw at 13:53.
  • Facing a 52-42 deficit with 11:07 remaining after a Morales bucket from behind the arc, Gillus drained back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite a 13-2 run capped by Higgins' layup at 7:25.
  • The Mountain Hawks extended their lead to 68-62 at 2:26 on a pair of free throws from Whitney-Sidney.
  • BU reeled off seven straight points behind Alexander's two free throws and an assist on Nobili's layup that led to Morales' netting another 3-pointer at 1:09.
  • Lehigh missed a contested 3-point attempt on the next possession but forced BU into a turnover and flushed both free throw attempts to grab a 70-69 lead.
  • After Higgins blocked Morales' layu attempt with seven seconds remaining out of bounds, Brewster was able to draw a foul and help send the game to the second consecutive overtime between the two programs.
