Barnes Backstops Terriers to 12-10 Win at Loyola Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior goalkeeper Will Barnes matched his career high with 19 saves to help lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 12-10 win over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Barnes was outstanding as BU improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in Patriot League play. He made two terrific stops in the final three minutes to stall a Loyola rally, with the Greyhounds finally getting within two with just 35 seconds left.

Graduate students Vince D'Alto (3g, 2a) and Louis Perfetto (2g, 3a) led the Terriers with five points apiece while their running mate at attack, junior Brenden Kelly, recorded a hat trick. Junior Zach Travaglini tallied two goals while graduate student Thomas Niedringhaus and senior Tommy Bourque also found the back of the net. Graduate student Jake Cates joined Perfetto with three assists.

Graduate student Roy Meyer had another outstanding game at LSM, as he caused two turnovers and grabbed five ground balls. Senior Dane DeGoler also scooped up five ground balls while graduate student Patrick Morrison recorded two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bourque gave BU a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds into the proceedings with a terrific individual effort.
  • D'Alto then found Perfetto wide open at the crease for a 2-0 lead.
  • Cates connected with Travaglini late in the first quarter to push the Terriers' lead to 3-0 before D'Alto dodged his way to his first goal of the game just 39 seconds into the second frame.
  • Loyola scored two straight goals to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 11:00 on the clock.
  • D'Alto then converted a man-up chance with 7:40 to go in the half before Kelly made it 6-2 at 5:57.
  • The Hounds made it a 6-3 contest with 1:27 left, but Cates and Kelly combined to beat the buzzer to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room.
  • Loyola scored the first two goals of the second half, but Perfetto and D'Alto scored a minute apart to negate those strikes and maintain the Terriers' four-goal cushion entering the fourth quarter.
  • Loyola scored a man-up marker just 24 seconds into the frame to make it 9-6.
  • D'Alto answered with 12:01 left when he drew a double team and found Niedringhaus for the Terriers' 10th goal of the game.
  • Perfetto then dished to Kelly on the doorstep to push the advantage to 11-6.
  • Loyola got one back to make it an 11-7 score, but Travaglini regained the five-goal lead with a terrific play. Luke Staudt (19 saves) made a terrific save on a Kelly bid, but Travaglini caught the rebound and scored as he fell to the ground.
  • The Greyhounds never quit and scored the final three goals of the game, but Barnes and the Terrier defense came up big when it counted the most to never let Loyola get any closer.
