BOSTON – The Boston University women's rowing program ushered in a new era with three victories over Cornell in its spring opener on Saturday morning on the Charles River.
Though sunny skies greeted the course for the first time this week, wind gusts approached nearly 30 miles per hour, creating a fierce headwind with a slight cross coming from Cambridge. As a result, the Second Varsity 4+ race was shortened to 1,000 meters.
BU started its racing with the Varsity 8+, coxed by
Trisha Jaggi and stroked by
Mariana Forehand. The Terriers triumphed in a time of 7:59.2, nearly 21 seconds ahead of Cornell's top crew.
In the Second Varsity 8, the Terriers, coxed by
Audrey Lucerne and stroked by
Ada Giraldo, recorded a time of 8:27.4, good for a nearly 16-second cushion over the Big Red.
BU's top Varsity 4+, coxed by
Kennedy Walker and stroked by
Elisabeth Arnason, withstood Cornell to cross the finish in 8:47.2, defeating the Big Red by over 11 seconds.
Due to the strong winds, BU's Second Varsity 4+, coxed by
Abby Kleiner and stroked by
Julia Kraski, was limited to the final 1,000 meters of the course. The Terriers finished in second with a time of 4:44.6, 11 seconds behind Cornell.
With Director of Women's Rowing Malcolm Doldron's first spring race at the helm concluded, BU shifts to next Saturday (April 6), facing Northeastern and Dartmouth on the Charles River.
