BOSTON – Riding a five-game win streak, the No. 2 seeded Boston University men's basketball team will open the Patriot League tournament by hosting No. 7 Navy in a quarterfinal clash Thursday night with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
The postseason contest marks the third in five years between the two programs after BU won at home in the 2020 quarterfinals (69-63) en route to the title and then fell in overtime on the road in the 2022 semifinals (81-79).
TERRIER TIDBITS
- Avoiding the first round for the eighth time in 10 years, BU is 53-36 (.596) all-time in conference tourneys and 10-9 in the PL with a pair of title game appearances (2014, 2020). BU and Colgate are the only two teams to have participated in all 10 quarterfinals since the Terriers joined the PL in the summer of 2013.
- The seven-time conference champion Terriers are 26-16 (.619) all-time in quarterfinal games following a 71-69 OT loss at Army West Point in 2022. BU is 9-3 (.750) in home PL matchups, last eliminating Loyola Maryland, 76-64, during the 2022 PL quarterfinals.
- BU is 19-4 all-time as a No. 2 seed with a 1-1 mark in the PL. In 2017, the Terriers eliminated Loyola Maryland, 64-60, and then came up just short in double overtime to Lehigh, 91-88.
- The Terriers are entering a conference tournament on a 5+ game win streak for the first time since 2011 when they were also the No. 2 seed and captured the America East title.
- 2024 All-PL Second Team and All-Defensive Team honoree Miles Brewster leads BU in scoring (10.9 ppg) while adding a team-high 3.2 apg and 1.5 spg.
- Over the last nine games in conference play, 2024 All-Rookie honoree Kyrone Alexander (9.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg) averaged 13.6 ppg while shooting a near-perfect 42-of-45 at the free throw line.
- During the current five-game win streak, senior Anthony Morales (9.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg) has averaged 10.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg. Sophomore Otto Landrum (8.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg) has also averaged in double figure (10.0 ppg), while sophomore Nico Nobili (7.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg) has averaged a team-high 5.4 rpg.
- On the season, the Terriers are averaging 65.9 ppg and 41.3 FG% while holding opponents to 66.2 ppg and 43.0 FG%.
SCOUTING NAVY
- The Midshipmen are 3-12 on the road compared to their 10-5 home mark, picking most recently wins at American (71-65) and Loyola Maryland (69-62) following the 74-65 loss at BU.
- Navy opened the PL tournament on Tuesday with a 64-48 home win over the Greyhounds for their second double-digit victory during the five-game win streak with a 76-66 win vs. Holy Cross.
- 5-foot-10 guard and All-PL Second Team member Austin Benigni leads the Mids at 16.8 ppg with 6-foot-5 forward Donovan Draper in second at 9.7 ppg alongside a team-high 9.0 rpg, 1.9 spg and 20 blocks.
- Navy ranks ninth nationally in turnover margin (4.6), committing just 10.2 miscues a game.
- The Mids are averaging 66.6 ppg and 39.7 FG% while holding opponents to 66.6 ppg and 43.2 FG%.
SERIES HISTORY
- BU leads the all-time series, 13-11, dating back to 1959 when the Terriers won in the NCAA Sweet 16 to reach the Elite Eight.
- Back on Feb. 17, the Terriers claimed a 74-65 home victory to snap a six-game losing streak against the Midshipmen.
- Both teams finished with six 3-pointers apiece, but BU posted an 18-11 advantage in made free throws with both Alexander and Landrum tallying 19 points apiece.
- In the last meeting at Navy back on Jan. 3, the Midshipmen overcame a 29-23 halftime deficit by shooting 52.0 FG% in the second half and holding BU to 32.0 FG% to claim a 62-60 victory.

- The BU-Navy winner will face either No. 3 Lafayette or No. 6 Lehigh on Sunday (March 10) in the PL semifinals on CBS Sports Network.
