Terriers Rack Up Two Wins Against Northeastern, Rhode Island

April 13, 2024

BOSTON – The Boston University women's rowing program closed out its home slate for the spring with wins in the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 against Northeastern and Rhode Island on Saturday morning on the Charles River.

The Huskies captured the Council Cup with their Varsity 8 win, but the Terriers responded with back-to-back victories as all five crews finished in the top-three.

Temperatures climbed into the 50s with the sun peering out in the earlier portion of the racing. A cross-headwind challenged the boats from port to starboard.

In the Varsity 8 race to ignite the morning, BU, coxed by Audrey Lucerne and stroked by Sofia Suhinin, sported a three-seat lead on Northeastern halfway through the race. The Terriers maintained the advantage for 1,500 meters, but the Huskies' final sprint helped them cross the finish line first in 7:11.5, with BU in second at 7:13.8 by half a length.

A highly competitive Second Varsity 8 race saw the Terriers, coxed by Alex Aravides and stroked by Ada Giraldo, take multiple seats on the Huskies approaching the Mass. Ave. Bridge. The Terriers continued their sprint to take first in a time of 7:33.8. The Rams' drive in the final 500 meters allowed them to nearly catch up to Northeastern, who was only second over URI by .8 seconds.

The Terrier Varsity 4, coxed by Kennedy Walker and stroked by Sonya Carson, immediately jumped out to a lead in the opening 500 meters, gradually building to two lengths of open water for the win in 8:40.9. Northeastern was second at 8:54.5.

The Second Varsity 4, coxed by Abby Kleiner and stroked by Elisabeth Arnason, battled a headwind to place third behind the two Huskies' crews with a time of 9:01.3.

BU's Third Varsity 8, coxed by Maya Wiisanen and stroked by Skyler Fong, wrapped up the day with a second-place result in 8:14.6, just over six seconds behind Northeastern.

After a two-week layoff from competition, BU heads down to the Lake Wheeler Invite from April 26-27 in North Carolina.
