Waters Reaches Another Coaching Milestone as No. 21/23 Softball Claims DH Sweep at Colgate
April 7, 2024 | Softball
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Resuming Patriot League play, the No. 21/23 nationally-ranked Boston University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate student Allison Boaz (11-1) collected a 6-0 game-one shutout victory with six strikeouts and senior Kate Pryor delivered a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the eighth for the 4-2 (8) game-two win, as the Terriers improved to 29-4 (5-0 PL). Already setting the program record for wins back on Feb. 9 in the season opener, ninth-year head coach Ashley Waters (300-134, .691) becomes the fastest Patriot League coach to reach 300 wins.
Sophomore Brooke Deppiesse led BU with four combined hits on the day, including a pair of doubles, while freshman Kylie Doherty matched Pryor's team-high two RBIs with a two-run blast in the second inning of the first game. Sophomore Kasey Ricard (14-3) pitched six no-hit innings in the second matchup and finished with five shutouts against three allowed hits.

GAME 1: BU - 6, Colgate - 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Raiders earned a lead-off single and Boaz bounced back with three quick outs to end the first, Doherty followed graduate student Lizzy Avery's lead-off walk with a two-run blast to left center.
- The Raiders threatened in the bottom half with back-to-back singles, but Boaz maintained the shutout on a ground out and infield pop up to the circle.
- Avery led off an inning for the second time by reaching first successfully, this time in the fourth on a single, but the Terriers were unable to take advantage of a pair of walks, leaving the bases loaded on a ground out to second.
- Senior Kayla Roncin and graduate student Caitlin Coker earned back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth to set up Avery's RBI sac fly for the 3-0 advantage.
- Deppiesse started the sixth with a one-out double and scored on graduate student Audrey Sellers' RBI single down the left field line to extend the lead to 4-0.
- The Raiders later dropped a high infield pop up in the top of the seventh to let two more Terriers reach home plate.
- Trying to avoid the shutout, Colgate had two runners on base via an error and walk before grounding out to Deppiesse at second.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second time following her game-one homer, Doherty helped BU get on the scoreboard first, this time earning a walk, advancing to third on Deppiesse's sac bunt and then stealing home when Pryor drew a rundown at first.
- Graduate student Audrey Sellers added to the lead by earning a nine-pitch walk in the fifth and then scoring on Roncin's two-out RBI double to center.
- Senior Lauren Keleher and Roncin hit back-to-back two-out singles in the seventh, but Colgate ended the threat with a ground out.
- The Raiders then broke Ricard's no-hit bid with a lead-off dribbler to second and later shutout attempt following a hit-by-pitch with Kara Fusco's 10-pitch, two-out and two-RBI double to right center.
- Colgate added a walk, but Ricard sent the game to extras by earning a fly out to right.
- The Raiders ran into trouble in the top of the eighth by walking Avery and giving up a one-out double to Deppiesse that helped set up Pryor's two-RBI double to left.
- Ricard also faced trouble for the second consecutive inning with a lead-off single and one-out walk but bounced back by earning back-to-back fly outs.
- The teams will wrap up the three-game series Monday (April 8) with a 12 p.m. start time.
