AMESBURY, Mass. - Former Boston University men's ice hockey standout Cade Webber was one of two inaugural recipients of the Hockey East Academic Champion Award, the league announced on Tuesday.
Webber joined Northeastern's Megan Carter in earning this award, which honors outstanding accomplishments from one men's and one women's player both on the ice and in the classroom.
"We are proud to honor Megan and Cade as the inaugural Hockey East Academic Champions and acknowledge their incredible accomplishments in the classroom and on the ice," said Hockey East Commissioner Steve Metcalf. "Hockey East prides itself on developing not just professional athletes, but first-class students and people. We hope to elevate these achievements with this award and create a lasting legacy of their service to their campus communities for years to come."Â
Academically, Webber graduated from the Questrom School of Business in three years, earning a 3.47 GPA in the process. He was honored this spring with the E. Ray Speare Award as the top male scholar-athlete at BU and twice earned Scholar All-America accolades from the AHCA.
Webber enjoyed a fantastic four-year career at BU, highlighted by a record-setting season in 2023-24. He set a new single-season NCAA record with 133 blocked shots en route to being named Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman. He also recorded a career-high six assists, matched his career high with six points and was a career-best plus-15 this past season. He averaged an incredible 3.50 blocks per game, including seven at Providence the night he set the NCAA single-season record, and six against Minnesota in the NCAA Sioux Falls Regional final.
A native of Meadville, Pennsylvania, Webber helped BU win the 2022 Beanpot, the 2023 Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles, and was instrumental in leading the Terriers to back-to-back Frozen Fours as an assistant captain. Webber finished his career as a plus-35 with 16 points (1g, 15a) and an impressive 298 blocked shots.Â
Webber signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in April.
