July 6, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
SAN JOSE - Macklin Celebrini, the 2024 Hobey Baker Award winner, has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks, the organization announced on Saturday.
Celebrini, who became the second Terrier (and fifth NCAA player) to be selected with the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft, will turn pro after one of the finest freshman campaigns in Division I history. He became just the fourth freshman and fourth Terrier overall to win the Hobey Baker Award winner as the top Division I men's college hockey player, doing so as the youngest player in the nation at just 17 years old. He also became the fourth man to be named Hockey East Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season, and was also named a First Team All-American and secured the Tim Taylor Award as the National Rookie of the Year.
"Thank you to all my coaches, teammates and everyone at BU who had such a positive impact on my development as a player and as a person," Celebrini said. "I truly enjoyed my time on campus and am so grateful to call myself a Terrier."
A native of Vancouver, Celebrini totaled 64 points on 32 goals and 32 assists and was the only player in the country to collect 30 goals and 30 assists this past season. He is just the fourth freshman since the turn of the century to record 30 goals and 30 assists in the same season and became the only player since start of 2005-06 season to score 22 goals in his first 25 games. Celebrini was Hockey East's only unanimous First Team All-Star and was also selected as New England Rookie of the Year. Celebrini also earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Academic Team after securing at least a 3.0 GPA in each semester this past year.
"On behalf of our entire program I want to congratulate Macklin on signing his first professional contract," head coach Jay Pandolfo said. "Macklin is not only a terrific player but a terrific person and we're all excited to watch him shine at the next level."
"Everyone at BU is incredibly proud of not only what Macklin accomplished on the ice but how he represented the University," director of athletics Drew Marrochello said. "We're proud to call Macklin a Terrier and look forward to watching him succeed in the NHL."
Celebrini is scheduled to make his NHL debut on Thursday, Oct. 10, when the Sharks host the St. Louis Blues.
