September 30, 2024 | Women's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University women's soccer juniors Giulianna Gianino and Margy Porta captured Patriot League weekly awards for the week of Sept. 30, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Porta was tabbed as the league's Offensive Player of the Week. Gianino was named as the Midfielder of the Week. Freshman goalkeeper was also listed as an honorable mention.
The Offensive Player of the Week is Porta's first-career weekly award. She is the first Terrier to receive the honor since teammate Natalie Godoy on Oct. 23, 2023. Porta's award is the 18th Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award in program history.
Porta tallied three goals in BU's undefeated week. On Wednesday (Sept. 25) at Colgate, the Northbrook, Ill. native tallied the game-tying goal in the 58th minute on a 20-yard strike, helping the Terriers win 3-2. She followed that up with her first-career brace on Saturday (Sept. 28) against Lehigh en route to BU's 6-1 triumph.
Porta's goal streak has extended to four matches, scoring five goals in that span. This season, she has already set career-highs with six goals in nine starts. Her six tallies are tied for third in the Patriot League this season.
Gianino has now won two Patriot League Midfielder of the Week awards this year, earning her first since Aug. 19. It marks the third of her career, and fifth weekly award overall.
The Norwell, Mass. product totaled six points across two games last week. She supplied the game-winning goal in the 88th minute at Colgate on Wednesday (Sept. 25), directly scoring off a corner kick for a goal that made SportsCenter's Top10 plays as the No. 2 highlight later that night. She then recorded four second-half points vs. Lehigh on Saturday (Sept. 28) on one goal and two assists, matching her single-game best.
At 14 points on the year, Gianino paces the Terriers in points while sharing the goals lead with Porta at six. Her 1.27 points per game is fifth across the Patriot League. With 16 goals and 39 points in her collegiate career, she is tied for 12th and 18th, respectively, in the program's record books.
Carr notched 14 saves across the two matches, including a career-high 11 stops at Colgate. Her diving save against the Raiders in the 80th minute was No. 6 on SportsCenter's Top10 plays that night as well.
BU (2-6-3, 2-0-1 PL) breaks from conference play on Tuesday (Oct. 1) to visit Yale. Opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
