BOSTON – Despite sophomore Inés Monteagudo Pardo tallying a season high 12 points, the Boston University women's basketball program could not overcome Army West Point in a 59-52 loss on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
BU (7-10, 1-5 PL) led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter and nearly 31 game minutes overall. However, the Black Knights (13-3, 5-1 PL) outscored the Terriers 21-6 in the fourth quarter.
Monteagudo nailed four three-pointers while adding three rebounds and two steals. Freshman
Allison Schwertner posted 11 points and six rebounds, while sophomore
Sisi Bentley snagged eight caroms.
Trinity Hardy led Army West Point with 21 points and eight rebounds. Camryn Tade nailed four three-pointers en route to 18 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU jumped out to a 10-4 lead that composed of six three throws, while senior Alex Giannaros and Schwertner made buckets inside the paints.
- Hardy scored five points in the final 3:31 of the first quarter as BU went scoreless, with her and-1 bringing the visitors within 10-9.
- Tade pushed the Black Knights ahead with a driving layup, only for Monteagudo to respond with a three off sophomore Aoibhe Gormley's pass 1:05 into the second quarter for a 13-11 edge.
- Army West Point knotted the game at 15 at the 7:22 mark, but did not score for the rest of the first half. BU regained the lead 93 seconds later on another Monteagudo triple.
- At the three-minute mark, sophomore Bella McLaughlin drew contact on a layup to complete a three-point play, then teamed up with Bentley to pick Fiona Hastick's pocket and set up freshman Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir for a layup that built the lead to 23-15.
- After the Terriers had a 25-15 halftime lead, both teams combined for four baskets in the third quarter's first 1:40. Hardy and Kya Smith made layups for Army, while sophomore Audrey Ericksen stuck a 10-foot jumper and Giannaros drained a straightaway three.
- BU took its largest lead of the game with 4:17 on the timer after five straight points from Schwertner, including a left win three-pointer as the shot clock expired to make it 39-27.
- The Black Knights got within six on Reese Ericson's three and Hardy's second-chance layup, but junior Anete Adler banked in a layup before the buzzer to give BU a 46-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- Tade opened the final stanza with a pair of threes, while the Terriers generated just one point until 56 seconds remained.
- Army gained the lead for good, 48-47, with 5:25 to play as Tade found a lane for a layup, then Ericson found Hastick for a layup. Tade's third triple of the frame came. as the clock read 3:32 pushed it to 53-47.
- Bentley halted the 13-0 Black Knight run with two free throws, but Tade's 13th point in the period replenished the double digit lead with 52.1 seconds left.
STATS
- BU made just over 39 percent (18-for-46) of its shots for the game, and was 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from three-point range.
- Army West Point went 20-for-61 (32.8 percent) from the field and just over 20 percent from beyond the arc.
- The Black Knights nailed 92.9 percent (13-for-14) of their foul shots, compared to 58.8 percent (10-for-17) for the Terriers.
- Rebounds slightly favored Army, 37-36.
- McLaughlin led BU with four assists, as the Terriers racked up 13 assists.
- BU generated 23 bench points, marking the fifth consecutive game the Terrier reserves scored 20-plus points.
NOTES
- Giannaros moved into 13th place in program history and became the 14th Terrier in program history to surpass 1,200 career points. She now sits at 1,205 points.
- She also surpassed 100 steals with two in the game.
- Monteagudo is up to 47.6 percent shooting from three during Patriot League play and is averaging nearly 11 points per game in her last three contests.
- Schwertner has reached double figures in consecutive games for the second time in 2024-25, and for the first time since Dec. 1-5, 2024.
- The Terriers have lost three consecutive Patriot League games for just the second time since the 2019-20 campaign.
- The all-time series now stands at 20-13 in BU's favor.
- During the game, BU welcomed back alumnae to Case Gym with a midcourt presentation. Alumnae from the 1980s to the 2020s attended the game.
