Terriers Halted by Black Knights in 69-59 Road Loss

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Alex Giannaros scored a team high 13 points, but the Boston University women's basketball program could not overcome Army West Point in a 69-59 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena.

Down by as many as 29 points, BU (6-7, 0-2 PL) outscored the Black Knights (10-2, 2-0 PL) 18-5 in the fourth quarter to pull within 10 points, but ran out of time after Army shot 52 percent from the field in the first three quarters.

Giannaros canned three of her five three-point attempts to lead nine different Terriers that scored. Sophomores Audrey Ericksen and SiSi Bentley each collected eight points.

Trinity Hardy led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Fiona Hastick and Soleil Montrose contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Giannaros had her first three-pointer sandwiched between two Hastick triples, making it 8-5 Army in the game's opening minutes.
  • Freshman Channing Warren fought through contact on the right block for a layup at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter, but the Black Knights rattled off seven straight points before Ericksen's three to build a 19-12 lead after the frame.
  • A pair of threes from Montrose and Hastick in addition to Brooke Wilson's layup helped Army score the second quarter's first eight points, extending its lead to 27-12 just 1:25 into the period.
  • Sophomore Aoibhe Gormley's foul shot ended the scoreless streak, and she later found freshman Allison Schwertner by the left baseline for a contested floating jumper with 6:23 left in the second, but Hastick stuck a jumper and Hardy scored four consecutive points to hand Army its largest lead of the half at 37-16.
  • Three points from Bentley and a floater from junior Anete Adler capped the first half for the Terriers, who trailed 42-25 at the break.
  • Army opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run, with Hardy supplying seven points, to make it 54-27 with 6:38 left in the period.
  • The Terriers capped the third quarter on a 13-4 run, however. Freshman Inez Gallegos fueled it with five points while Ericksen knocked down a corner three to pull the visitors with 64-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The first six points of the fourth quarter went to BU on layups from freshman Warren, Ericksen and sophomore Bella McLaughlin, forcing a Black Knight timeout with 6:53 left in regulation.
  • Montrose's turnaround jumper found the cup, only for a 9-0 Terrier run to ensue afterwards after Giannaros' three and driving layup, plus free throws from Warren and Gormley. That brought BU within 68-56 approaching three minutes to go.
  • With 1:54 to play, Gallegos sank a layup while drawing contact but couldn't hit the free throw. Neither side would make a field goal from that point.
STATS
  • The Terriers made just under 42 percent of their shots, including a 5-for-11 clip (45.5 percent) from downtown.
  • Overall, Army West Point was 27-for-61 (44.3 percent) from the field and 10-for-30 on three-point attempts.
  • BU held a 30-24 advantage in paint points and 23-17 in bench points.
  • Army won the rebounding battle (38-29) and scored 11 second-chance points.
  • Gormley once again led BU with eight rebounds, while McLaughlin dished out a team high five assists. Each had two steals.
  • Bentley finished with eight points and six boards. All seven of Gallegos' points came in the second half.
