Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 1 Terriers Drop Contest to Michigan State

BOSTON — The No. 1 Boston University men's ice hockey team netted two power-play goals but was defeated by No. 3/4 Michigan State, 4-2, on Friday night at a sold out Agganis Arena.

BU (2-1-1) fell behind by two goals to the Spartans (2-1-0) midway through the first period before sophomore Sascha Boumedienne lit the lamp at 13:17 on the power play. The Spartans added another goal late in the opening frame before scoring their fourth and final goal to open the third period. Freshman Ryder Ritchie collected his second goal of the season on a 6-on-4 advantage with one minute remaining in regulation.

Freshmen Conrad Fondrk and Jack Murtagh and sophomores Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson all recorded one assist apiece. Sophomore Mikhail Yegorov has started in all four contests this season and recorded 30 saves on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU got through 1:59 of a penalty kill in the first period, but a tipped-in shot at 5:52 gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans doubled their lead shorthanded on the Terriers' five-minute power play at 7:30, capitalizing on a BU turnover to earn their second goal of the night.
  • BU cut its deficit to one on the man-advantage at 13:17. Below the right circle, Fondrk sent a cross-ice pass to Boumedienne at the point, who lasered the puck past Trey Augustine (18 saves) and into the top right corner of the net.
  • Michigan State regained its two-goal lead on an even-strength breakaway attempt at 15:12 to make it a 3-1 game after the opening frame.
  • Hutson set up sophomore Sacha Boisvert for a point-blank one-timer in the slot at 3:08 but was denied to open the middle period.
  • At the other end of the ice, Hutson staved off a shorthanded 2-on-1 attempt by the Spartans with a sprawling dive at 9:46.
  • Neither team lit the lamp in the second period, with Yegorov turning away all 11 shots faced and BU posting 9 shots of its own.
  • Michigan State pushed its lead to 4-2 on its first shot of the third period at 1:58.
  • The Terrier penalty kill stood strong in the final frame, preventing the Spartans from converting on their two attempts.
  • Freshman Jack Murtagh drew a BU power play late in the period after sitting for a two-minute minor, but the Terriers could not convert.
  • With Yegorov pulled and a two-minute man advantage, BU scored at 6–on-4 to bring the final score to 4-2. Hutson and Eiserman played catch with the puck before Eiserman in the right circle found Ritchie in the slot for a tip-in off his right skate.
