BOSTON - Junior netminder Max Lacroix stopped all 21 shots faced as the No. 2 Boston University men's ice hockey team shut out RPI, 3-0, in an exhibition contest on Sunday night at Agganis Arena.
BU and RPI remained scoreless until late in the second period when junior captain Gavin McCarthy struck at the 15:46 mark. Freshman Jonathan Morello doubled the Terrier lead on the power play at 9:47 of the third period before freshman Ryder Ritchie added an empty-netter at 18:39.
Sophomore Cole Eiserman recorded an assist on all three BU goals. Additionally, sophomore Cole Hutson picked up two assists and sophomore Kamil Bednarik had one helper.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On the Terriers' first power play of the game, Lacroix stood strong in between the pipes to prevent an RPI shorthanded breakaway attempt just 6:35 into the proceedings.
- Lacroix stopped all nine shots he faced in the opening frame to keep the contest scoreless, as did RPI goaltender Bruno Bruveris (11 saves).
- RPI made a switch in net to start the middle frame, with Nate Krawchuk (nine saves) coming on in relief.
- Sophomore Brandon Svoboda's forechecking abilities were on full display during the Engineers' lone power play of the night, as he created a shorthanded breakaway attempt but was denied at 13:43.
- Shortly after that successful penalty kill, McCarthy opened the scoring. Hutson dropped off the puck at the blue line before McCarthy took his shot below the right circle, and with some puck luck, found the back of the net.
- BU's defense limited RPI to just three shots on net throughout the second stanza.
- The Engineers rotated to its third-string goalie, Carson Dorfman (nine saves), to open the final frame.
- The Terriers had extended power-play time midway through the third period and Morello capitalized to double the lead. Hutson got the play started, scooping up the rubber below his goal line and skating through all three zones before finding Morello in the left circle for a one-timer at 9:48.
- RPI pulled Dorfman in favor of an extra attacker late in the game, but freshman Ryder Ritchie converted into the empty net at 18:39 to give BU a 3-0 lead.
- Lacroix made nine saves in that third period, including several clutch stops Dorfman out of his cage, to secure the shutout
