Terriers End Regular Season With 2-1 Victory Over Holy Cross

BOSTON – Facing a one-goal deficit, both junior Andrea Di Blasio and senior Ethan Gill found the back of the net to help the Boston University men's soccer team wrap up the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
Thanks to the win and other conference results, BU (9-7, 5-4 PL) moved up from sixth to fourth in the standings to earn a home game in the upcoming Patriot League tournament, while the Crusaders (4-8-6, 1-5-3 PL) saw their season come to an end. The Terriers will continue their campaign by next hosting No. 5-seeded Bucknell in the first round on Saturday (Nov. 8) at 1 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams exchanged early corner kicks, Di Blasio forced Crusader keeper John Smith to make a diving save at 6:42 to set up another corner.
- The Crusaders cleared the Terriers' third corner in the 26th minute and pushed the ball up the field to eventually feed Jack Field with a cross for a quick strike past senior Sheraz Saadat.
- Seeking the equalizer, Di Blasio drew a foul inside the box and converted on BU's first penalty kick of the season at 42:41.
- A minute later, sophomore Dylan Williams nearly grabbed the lead when Smith moved off his line to try to clear the ball, but two Crusaders were on the goal line to block the shot.
- The Terriers started the second half on the attack with senior Alex Bonnington and Gill both taking shots at the over the first five minutes.
- After Bonnington hit the crossbar at 54:47, Liam Heneghan forced Saadat to make two saves in successionfive minutes later.
- During the 67th minute, sophomore Jack Grossman fed a through ball up to Bonnington, who ripped a shot saved by Smith that led to Gill pouncing on the rebound for the 2-1 advantage.
- The backline stepped up and prevented the Crusaders from attempting another shot to seal the victory.
- After Di Blasio netted his personal-best fifth goal following a nine-point performance last season for the Terriers, Gill scored his sixth goal after totaling seven over the last three years for the Crusaders.
- Thanks to his second game winner, Gill moved into a tie for first on the team with sophomore Pharis Petrica (3g,7a) at 13 points.
- Both Bonnington and Grossman increased the total of Terriers to assist on a goal this year to 14 while also putting the number of Terriers with at least one goal and assist at nine.
- The Terriers posted a 13-5 advantage in shots and edged the Crusaders in corners, 5-4.
- BU extended its unbeaten streak in the series to three games (2-0-1) to move to 16-5-2 all-time against the Crusaders.
- With men's soccer's victory, BU extended the lead in the all-sports Turnpike Trophy competition vs. HC to 5-0.
- Seeking its second automatic NCAA berth in three years, No. 4 BU will start the PL tournament on Saturday (Nov. 8) by hosting No. 5 Bucknell in the first round at 1 p.m.
- The Terriers defeated the Bison, 3-2, on the road back on Sept. 27.
- The Terriers are 1-2-4 all-time in the quarterfinals of a conference tournament with the lone win coming in 2006 against America East foe UAlbany.
- BU is 0-0-2 all-time in the PL quarterfinals, coming up short in penalty kicks at home to Army (2018) and Bucknell (2016).
