BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior
Will Barnes and freshman
Timothy Shannehan of the Boston University men's lacrosse team earned weekly awards from the Patriot League, as announced on Monday.
Barnes was selected as Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week and Shannehan was named PL Rookie of the Week. Both Terriers shined in Saturday's season-opening, 9-7 win at Siena.
For the second straight year, Barnes earned PL Goalkeeper of the Week accolades after his first start of the season. On Saturday at Siena, he made 12 saves, including six in the first half as he held Siena scoreless until there was 12:05 left in the third quarter. Barnes only allowed four goals during settled 6-on-6 situations and made a crucial save with 2:00 left in the contest as he ran back to the cage on the 10-man ride and knocked down a shot attempt at the last minute to keep the Terriers up by a goal, one of his four stops in the fourth quarter.
Shannehan shined in his Terrier debut, pacing the BU offense with four goals and one assist for five points. He recorded a natural hat trick, scoring the final three goals of the second quarter to help BU take a 4-0 lead into the break. He then assisted on the opening goal of the third quarter before beating a double team in the final seconds to score the game's last goal. Shannehan is just the second Terrier freshman to score four or more goals in a season opener and the first since Jack Wilson scored five goals in the 2015 opener against Mercer.
BU will host Monmouth in the Terriers' home opener on Friday, Feb. 14, at 3:30 p.m.
