Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 9 Terriers Fall at No. 7 Providence, 6-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Devin Kaplan scored twice in the third period, but the No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell at No. 7 Providence, 6-3, on Friday night at Schneider Arena.

Kaplan's two goals, including a shorthanded strike, brought BU (16-11-1, 10-7-1 HE) back within two with 4:27 to go, but Providence (17-7-5, 7-6-5 HE) added an empty-netter to ice the game.

Junior co-captain Ryan Greene also lit the lamp while classmate Quinn Hutson and sophomore Tom Willander recorded a pair of assists apiece. Sophomore Gavin McCarthy and freshman Kamil Bednarik each had one helper.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trevor Connelly opened the scoring at the 7:09 mark before Chase Yoder doubled the Friars' advantage at the 11:30 mark.
  • BU got within one at 5:46 of the second stanza thanks to Greene's one-timer on the power play.
  • The Friars answered just 20 seconds later to restore their two-goal edge before adding a fourth goal at the 16:29 mark to take a 4-1 lead to the third period.
  • BU pushed in the third to try and get back in the game but the Friars notched their fifth goal of the night at 12:53.
  • Kaplan got a goal back for BU on a power-play chance at the 13:48 mark when he redirected a centering feed from Hutson.
  • With the Terriers shorthanded, Kaplan received a pass from McCarthy and then dangled through a defender before lifting the puck past Philip Svedebäck.
  • The Terriers pulled senior Mathieu Caron in favor of an extra attacker, but the Friars scored an empty-netter with 1:27 remaining.

  • This was Kaplan's third career two-goal game and second this month, as he lit the lamp twice in the Terriers' 7-1 win over Harvard on Feb. 3.

  • He leads BU with 35 points on 16 goals and 19 assists.
