Kohr's Career Day Leads Terriers Past Monmouth, 15-6

BOSTON - Junior Jimmy Kohr scored a career-best six goals and added two assists for a career-high eight points to lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 15-6 win over Monmouth on Friday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU (2-0) never trailed in its home opener, holding a 5-0 lead after one quarter and taking a 10-2 lead into the second half. Kohr was a big part of that first-half outburst, as he scored five of his six goals in the opening 30 minutes. Senior Jimmy O'Connell also had a career day, notching his first-ever hat trick and adding a career-best three assists for six points. Freshman Timothy Shannehan, the other member of the Terriers' starting attack trio, notched two goals and set new career highs with four assists and six points. Kohr, O'Connell and Shannehan combined for 11 goals and nine assists as all three players had career days.

Freshman Mike Rooney scored his first two collegiate goals while classmate Andrew Pape notched his first collegiate goal. Junior Tommy Garofalo also found the back of the net. Junior transfer Sam Burns notched an assist in his Terrier debut while sophomore Tyler Fox and senior Brenden Kelly each had one helper apiece.

Defensively, junior Matt Freeman had a monster day for the Terriers. He matched the single-game program record with six caused turnovers in addition to collecting four ground balls. Kohr also had three caused turnovers as part of a Terrier ride that forced nine failed clears. Senior Matthew Fritz went 9-for-13 at the X with four ground balls while freshman Madden Murphy was 4-for-6 with three ground balls.

Senior Will Barnes made six saves and allowed just three goals in 49:29 of work before giving way to classmate Mike Allieri, who made one save in just over 10 minutes of action.

  • Kelly connected with O'Connell at 7:45 to make it 3-0 before Kohr fed Shannehan for a goal just 40 seconds later.
  • Kohr then closed the quarter with his second strike of the day with 2:38 on the clock.
  • Connor Gorman scored on an EMO to get Monmouth on the board with 9:29 left in the second quarter.
  • Kohr then scored a fantastic behind-the-back goal to make it 6-1 with 7:35 to go in the first half.
  • Burns found O'Connell less than a minute later to make it 7-1 before Jake Schneider cut the deficit to 7-2 moments later.

  • Kohr completed his sock trick with 9:03 to go, his goal coming between a pair of Monmouth strikes.
  • Garofalo and Rooney each scored to make it a 15-5 game before Bobby Keane ended the scoring at 1:24.
