No. 13/12 Terriers Lose Shootout After 2-2 Tie With New Hampshire

BOSTON – The No. 13/12 Boston University women's ice hockey team (21-9-2, 18-5-2 HE) played to a 2-2 tie and lost in a 10-round shootout to New Hampshire (15-15-2, 11-13-1 HE) on Saturday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
 
BU opened the scoring midway through the first frame, but UNH found an equalizer about two minutes later. The Terriers responded when they found the back of the net again to take a 2-1 lead at the close of the first 20 minutes. The Wildcats scored on the power play in the second to create a 2-2 tie that lasted through the third frame to force the game into overtime.
 
Neither team found the back of the net in the five-minute overtime period, resulting in a shootout. Both BU and UNH scored in the first round and neither team scored again until the eighth round. That 2-2 tie was broken in the tenth round, when the Wildcats found the back of the net to win the shootout, 3-2.
 
Graduate student Tamara Giaquinto scored BU's two goals. Junior Sydney Healey logged two assists while freshman Keira Healey and senior Christina Vote and each recorded one. Senior goaltender Callie Shanahan made 27 saves in the game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU drew a roughing call 1:16 into the first but UNH was successful on the penalty kill.
  • The Terriers capitalized on the pressure they put on the UNH net at the 10:02 mark when Giaquinto scored off passes from K. Healey and S. Healey.
  • UNH was quick to respond with an equalizer, scoring at the 12:04 mark.
  • Near the end of the frame, Vote took a shot in the slot off a pass from S. Healey which was initially saved.
  • Giaquinto collected the rebound to send the puck into the net at the crease, giving BU a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
  • The Wildcats were called for tripping at 3:32 in the second and nothing came on the power play.
  • At the 10:18 mark, BU went to the box for cross checking but successfully killed the penalty.
  • The Terriers went to the box again, this time for boarding, at 13:28.
  • UNH found the back of the net 1:11 into the power play to even the score, 2-2.
  • BU went to the box one more time before the close of the second for body checking and successfully killed the penalty.
  • The Terriers outshot UNH in the third, 13 to 6, but neither team scored as the game went into overtime.
  • BU continued to outshoot UNH four to one in extra minutes, yet the game went to a shootout.
  • The Terriers started the shootout with junior Lilli Welcke, who scored.
  • Her goal was answered by UNH as it tied the shootout 1-1.
  • Through seven rounds, neither BU nor UNH found the back of the net again.
  • Senior Liv Haag was up for the Terriers in the eighth round, scoring to give BU a 2-1 advantage.
  • The Wildcats once again tied the shootout 2-2 in the eighth round.
  • No one scored in round nine, and BU missed its shot in the tenth round.
  • UNH then found the back of the net to win the shootout, 3-2.
 
GAME NOTES
  • BU outshot UNH 52 to 39, setting a season high in shots on goal.
  • The Terriers won 23 faceoffs compared to the Wildcats' 17.
  • UNH blocked 10 shots while BU blocked eight.
  • UNH was 1-for-3 on the power play while BU was 0-for-2.
  • Three Terriers were +2 in the game.
  • S. Healey and Giaquinto each had two points.
  • The Terriers need to secure at least one point in the series against UConn next weekend to clinch the regular season title.
