Late Alexander Bucket Lifts Men's Basketball Past Loyola Maryland, 68-66

BOSTON – Down by three with 73 seconds remaining, sophomore Kyrone Alexander scored the game's final five points to help the Boston University men's basketball team edge Loyola Maryland, 68-66, on Wednesday night at Case Gym.

Winning a contest that featured 10 lead changes and four ties, the Terriers improve to 14-14 and 8-7 in conference play, while the Greyhounds now sit at 10-16 (5-10 PL). BU shot 50.9 percent from the field and held Loyola Maryland to 42.4 FG% to earn the program's 10th straight home win, marking the longest streak since the 1996-97 squad went 10-0 on the season.

Just days after hitting the game-winning bucket with 5.0 seconds remaining in the 93-91 2OT victory over Colgate, Alexander flushed his second consecutive go-ahead bucket at 25 seconds to finish with 20 points alongside six rebounds and four assists. Graduate student Miles Brewster totaled 16 points thanks in part to four 3-pointers, while freshman Ben Defty recorded 12 points and two blocks to help BU avenge an earlier 69-67 defeat to Loyola in Baltimore.

Jordan Stiemke led the Greyhounds with 19 points, and Jacob Theodosiou matched Milos Ilic with 13 points and seven rebounds. Theodosiou also had four rebounds, while Ilic dished out five assists in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alexander opened the game with a jumper and shortly thereafter followed with a 3-pointer as part of a 9-3 spurt capped by Defty's two free throws at 16:02.
  • Brewster later scored from behind the arc at 10:09 to grab the Terriers' largest lead of the half, 19-12.
  • The Greyhounds responded with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes with Stiemke prompting a BU timeout after completing an alleyoop pass from Theodosiou.
  • Defty came out of the timeout with a layup to spark an 11-2 run finished by senior Malcolm Chimezie's hook shot at 1:16, but Sitemke responded with a 3-pointer to cut BU's lead to 34-31 at the half.
  • The teams went back-and-forth for most of the second half with Loyola's David Brown III netting a 3-pointer for 45-43 lead at 13:48.
  • BU scored the next 10 points with Brewster and freshman Azmar Abdullah netting back-to-back 3-pointers to grab their largest lead of the game, 53-45, at 11:09.
  • Brown struck again from behind the arc to help Loyola retake the lead, 58-57, at 6:16, and Stiemke later scored on a putback with the bonus free throw for a 64-60 advantage at 3:58.
  • After Ilic hit a hook shot for a 66-63 lead, Alexander came right back following a BU timeout with a contested jumper and free throw at 1:12.
  • The Terriers then earned a defensive stop, and Alexander came through with the go-ahead jumper for the 68-66 lead at 25 seconds.
  • During Loyola's last possession of the game, Defty blocked Ilic's layup attempt and helped BU force a rushed 3-pointer from Theodosiou in the corner that was off the mark.
GAME NOTES
  • Alexander has now reached 20+ points five times this season after accomplishing the feat once as a freshman.
  • Earning his fourth start of the season, junior Ben Roy tallied eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • BU was missing five scholarship players due to either injury or illness, including sophomore Michael McNair (10.7 ppg) who missed his first game of the season.
  • The Terriers are now 20-8 all-time against the Greyhounds with a 7-1 mark over the last eight meetings. The last five games have been decided by a combined 10 points.
UP NEXT
  • BU will fly down to American for a 4 p.m tilt on Saturday.
  • Thanks to January's 60-54 win over the Eagles, the Terriers are on a four-game win streak.
  • The Terriers are 10-4 all-time at home in the series and 16-9 overall.
