Terriers Overwhelm Greyhounds in 55-38 Victory

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Aoibhe Gormley matched her season high with 16 points and junior Anete Adler scored 13 points to guide the Boston University women's basketball team past Loyola Maryland in a 55-38 win on Wednesday evening at Reitz Arena.

BU (9-16, 3-11 PL) coaxed the Greyhounds (9-16, 3-11 PL) into 17 turnovers while allowing a season low 38 points. With the win, the Terriers move into a tie with Loyola Maryland for eighth place in the Patriot League standings with four regular season games remaining.

Gormley was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, adding six rebounds and three steals. Adler made five baskets and recorded three blocks. Freshman Allison Schwertner snagged 11 rebounds.

Amandine Amorich was Loyola Maryland's leading scorer with nine points. After dropping 28 points against BU on Feb. 1, Laura Salmerón was held to seven points on 3-of-11 shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU scored the game's first six points on layups from Schwertner and Gormley, the latter on a right lane drive after securing an offensive rebound.
  • Making her first appearance since Feb. 8, sophomore Bella McLaughlin's driving layup down the left side of the paint gave BU an eight-point lead. Her free throws at the end of the opening quarter pushed the Terrier lead to 17-10.
  • Neither side scored for over three minutes early in the second before Bentley navigated traffic on the left block for a layup. Sophomore Inés Monteagudo Pardo then countered a Loyola three with her own triple from the corner for a 22-15 BU edge with 5:11 until halftime.
  • Both teams combined for just one field goal in the final 4:30 of the period, a floater from Adler at the 3:31 mark, settling the halftime score at 24-19 in BU's favor.
  • The Terriers' scoreless stretch expanded to 5:43, but the lead remained at five thanks to four free throws from senior Alex Giannaros afterwards.
  • BU missed its first six shots in the third quarter, but Gormley stuck a baseline floater as the shot clock wound down for the basket and the foul. She completed the three-point play for a 31-25 lead with 4:43 to play in the stanza.
  • That sparked a 10-2 Terrier run over the last 5:47 of the period to extend BU's lead to 38-27 after 30 minutes. Adler scored the Terriers' final five points in the spurt on a layup and three foul shots.
  • Gormley ignited the fourth with a steal off Gabby Betton's pass and turned it into an uncontested layup for a 40-27 advantage, BU's largest lead at the time.
  • The Greyhounds got as close as 10 after Salmerón's pull-up bucket, but Schwertner answered with two free throws and sophomore Sisi Bentley canned a midrange jumper with 6:38 left in regulation to make it 45-31.
  • Nearly two minutes later, Gormley's euro-step and right-lane layup pushed the edge to 49-36.
  • McLaughlin put the exclamation mark on the night with a steal near midcourt and a layup on the other end with 2:05 on the clock.

  • BU finished the game shooting just over 40 percent, with help from a 77.8 clip in the fourth quarter.
