BOSTON - In control from start to finish, the Boston University men's lacrosse team rolled to a 13-7 victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Senior
Jimmy O'Connell matched his career highs in points (6) and goals (4) while sophomore
Tyler Fox had his best performance as a Terrier with five points on the strength of four goals. Senior
Will Barnes was impressive in goal, stopping 11 of the 15 shots he faced.Â
BU jumped out to a 3-0 after the opening quarter and took a 10-1 lead late in the third while holding the Greyhounds scoreless for over 27 minutes of play.Â
Junior
Jimmy Kohr completed a hat trick with under five minutes to play to put the score at 13-4 in BU's favor before the visitors scored the final three goals of the contest.Â
BU improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League play while Loyola falls to 0-7 (0-2 PL).Â
Freshman
Timothy Shannehan recorded a goal, two assists and a team-best six ground balls. Senior
Zach Travaglini provided a goal while graduate student
James Corcoran and junior
Matt Freeman collected one assist apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Travaglini opened the scoring 2:43 into the contest when he collected a deep rebound and converted from the right side.
- O'Connell scored the next two goals with assists from Shannehan and Freeman, respectively, to give the home team a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
- Loyola scored the first goal of the second quarter but it would be its only tally until the closing seconds of the third.
- The rest of the second quarter and the third belonged to the Terriers as they took full control and put the game of reach.
- A four-goal run to end the opening half started and ended with O'Connell goals with Fox and Kohr also contributing tallies.
- O'Connell assisted on Kohr's first goal to give him five points by halftime.
- Three of Fox's markers came after the break as he started the third with back-to-back tallies to complete a hat trick and push the BU lead to 9-1.
- Shannehan capped the seven-goal run with his fifth tally of the day, making it 10-1 with 3:35 left in the third.
- The Loyola scoreless skein of 27:27 ended with 2.7 seconds left in the third on a tally by Brady West.
- Fox added a goal and assist in the fourth to complete his career day.

- BU outshot Loyola, 45-33, and held a 24-18 advantage in shots on goal.
- Barnes made saves on eight on the Greyhounds' first nine shots on goal.
- Matt Watkinson made 10 saves in goal for the Greyhounds before Ben Abel made one stop in the final quarter.
- The Greyhounds held a slim 37-36 edge in ground balls.
- The Terriers were 28-of-30 on clears and forced the Greyhounds into five failed clears on 26 attempts.
- Neither team had a man-up goal as BU was 0-for-1 and Loyola was 0-for-3.
