Softball Prevails in Marathon PL Opener at Bucknell, 14-7

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Competing in its longest contest in 20 years, the Boston University softball team outlasted Bucknell in a 15-inning marathon, 14-7, on Saturday afternoon at Becker Field.

With the help of a program-best 21 hits and junior Kasey Ricard's 17 strikeouts, the Terriers (15-10, 1-0 PL) won their 25th straight game against Patriot League competition, as the Bison fell to 9-14 and 0-1 in conference play. The two teams combined for 34 hits and seven errors with the game marking the longest NCAA contest of the season, topping three previous 14-inning matchups.

Ricard (10-6) never left the circle and threw 267 pitches with 178 marked as strikes, while Bucknell had three pitchers combine for 261 pitches. Three Terriers earned at least three hits, highlighted by sophomore Kylie Doherty's 4-for-8 performance at the plate that included a walk and a program-record five runs scored. Junior Brooke Deppiesse finished 3-for-6 while earning two RBIs and two runs scored, as classmate Megan Coyle totaled five RBIs and two runs scored, batting 3-for-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Doherty quickly put BU on the scoreboard by earning a lead-off walk, taking second on a sac bunt, stealing third and scoring on a passed ball.
  • She scored again in the third by singling up the middle with zero outs and eventually reaching home on Deppiesse's RBI single to left center.
  • The Bison rallied in the third with four runs off three hits and two errors, including an RBI triple and double.
  • After Bucknell stranded a runner at third in the fourth following a one-out triple, strikeout and ground out, the Terriers rallied back in the top of the fifth with two runs off two hits, including Coyle's RBI single, and an error.
  • Freshman Addie Lucier and Deppiesse both earned one-out hits but ended up stranded in scoring position during the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.
  • BU had a chance to grab the lead in the 12th following a pair of walks and junior Aimee Metz's two-out single, but the Bison managed to get the ball home just in time from center to apply the tag.
  • Bucknell had a great opportunity to walk off with the win during the bottom half by placing two Bison in scoring position via a single, BU error, sac bunt, walk and stolen base.
  • Ricard though ended the threat with a strikeout and ground out to short.
  • Following a quick 13th inning, the Terriers scored three runs off three hits in the 14th with Coyle delivering a two-RBI double to right and scoring on sophomore Libby Walsh's RBI triple.
  • Down to the last two outs, the Bison rallied back to tie the game with four straight hits, including a pair of one-out doubles, before Ricard prevented further damage with a pair of fly outs to right.
  • The Terriers took advantage of the extra inning by collecting seven runs off six hits and a pair of errors, including Deppiesse's RBI double and Coyle's two-RBI double.
  • Sophomore Kyomi Apalit earned a one-out single to start and and added a two-out RBI single for the 14-7 advantage.
  • Ricard quickly collected two outs and followed up on the Bison's single by earning a ground out to win the conference opener.
GAME NOTES
  • Doherty's five runs eclipse the four runs earned on 12 different occasions at BU with Lauren Keleher ('24) the last Terrier to reach four in 2023. Colgate's Cathy Stimson also scored five runs against Coppin State back on March 8, 1997.
  • The Terriers' 21 hits top the previous program high of 19 set at Bryant back on March 21, 2012.
  • Ricard's 15 innings of work were one shy of matching Ashlee Freeman's 16 innings against UMBC on April 4, 2005.
  • BU is now 1-2 in extra-inning clashes after dropping a 10-9 (8) decision at Charlotte back on March 12 and 1-0 (8) loss to Fordham on Feb. 23.
  • The Terriers recorded their 16th straight win against the Bison to improve to 28-7 all-time in a series that saw BU prevail in a pair of 1-0 decisions last season, including a 12-inning contest.
UP NEXT
  • Due to the length of the game (4:40), light rain and looming darkness, the second contest of the series was postponed, making Sunday (March 23) now a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
