Softball Earns Second PL Series Sweep With 7-5 Victory Over Colgate

BOSTON – Completing its second Patriot League series sweep of the season, the Boston University softball team claimed a 7-5 home victory against Colgate Saturday morning.

With their 10th straight win, the Terriers improve to 22-10 and 6-0 in conference play while also extending their home unbeaten streak to 43 contests at 42-0-1. Facing a 7-0 deficit, the Raiders (10-22, 0-3 PL) took advantage of BU's inability to earn its second consecutive run-rule decision along with two defensive errors in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate.

Ricard (14-6) stopped Colgate's two-out seventh-inning rally by earning a fly out to right, as she finished with eight strikeouts against three walks while allowing one earned run. Seven Terriers combined for eight hits with freshman Kieren McHugh batting 2-for-3 alongside two runs scored. Sophomore Livia Christopher delivered a two-RBI single, and freshman Addie Lucier added an RBI triple with two runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers struck early with junior Megan Coyle earning a two-out walk, advancing to third on a pair of wild pitches and scoring on senior Sydney Pecoraro's infield RBI single.
  • Junior Aimee Metz extended the lead to 2-0 by hitting a lead-off single and eventually scoring on sophomore Kylie Doherty's two-out RBI single to short.
  • Lucier helped double the lead to 4-0 by tripling home freshman Kieren McHugh after her double and then scoring on Metz's RBI grounder.
  • Ricard pitched 4.1 no-hitting innings until the Raiders singled to right center but maintained the shutout thanks to a swinging strikeout and infield ground out.
  • The Terriers added three runs off three hits and a walk in the bottom of the fifth with Apalit earning an RBI double and scoring alongside Lucier (walk) on Christopher's two-RBI single.
  • Christopher advanced to second on a wild pitch to give the Terriers two chances to claim a run-rule decision, but Colgate earned a strikeout and fly out to center to send the game to the sixth.
  • The Raiders earned two singles and a one-out RBI double to plate their first run of the series and added a walk to load the bases, but Ricard earned a strike out plus fly out to keep a 7-1 lead.
  • Ricard started the seventh with back-to-back strikeouts before running into trouble, as the Raiders continued their rally with back-to-back doubles thanks in part to a dropped foul ball and added an RBI single to prompt a pitching change.
  • Freshman Ava Johnson entered in relief and gave up a walk before the Raiders scored two more runs on an infield single and defensive miscue.
  • With Colgate bringing the game-tying run to the plate, Ricard returned to the circle and earned a fly out to right for the victory.
UP NEXT
  • BU will begin a five-game road trip at Providence on Wednesday (April 2) with a 3 p.m. start time.
  • During last year's doubleheader at home, BU posted an 8-0 (6) victory and recorded a 1-1 tie in a contest ended by darkness.
  • The Terriers will visit Providence for the first time since 2021 when they went 3-1 in the four contests.
