Terriers Defeat Greyhounds in PL First Round Victory, 75-51

BOSTON – Junior Anete Adler led four Terriers in double figures with 13 points to help the No. 8-seed Boston University women's basketball team triumph over No. 9-seed Loyola Maryland, 75-51, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

In a game where BU (12-18, 5-13 PL) never trailed, the Terriers shot over 50 percent from the field, scoring 26 and 27 points in the first and third quarters, respectively. BU's defense also generated 14 turnovers from the Greyhounds (9-21, 3-15 PL) and were plus-17 in rebounds.

With the win, BU advances to the Patriot League quarterfinal round to visit No. 1-seed Lehigh on Monday, March 10 at 6 p.m.

Adler made five of her nine shots while adding two blocks. Sophomores Sisi Bentley and Audrey Ericksen each scored 11 points, while senior Alex Giannaros collected 10 points. Eleven different Terriers scored on the day.

Laura Salmerón paced Loyola Maryland with nine points. Overall, nine Greyhounds found the bottom of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening 4:40, with all four baskets coming on layups. Bentley punctuated the run with a conventional three-point play off her own offensive rebound.
  • Salmerón's three at the 4:02 mark pulled Loyola Maryland within 11-7, but the Terriers scored 19 of the game's next 22 points, stretching all the way to the first three minutes of the second quarter. Ericksen nailed a pair of threes from the corner while Adler scored six straight Terrier points.
  • Giannaros nailed a left-wing three midway through the frame for a 33-12 edge, but BU didn't score until sophomore Inés Monteagudo Pardo's triple with 17 seconds on the clock. However, the Terriers still outscored the Greyhounds 10-9 in the period to enter halftime with a 36-18 advantage.
  • Loyola ignited the third quarter on a 7-3 run in the first 2:12. Avery Simmons' layup and two free throws capped the spurt.
  • Adler sank a jumper with 7:34 on the clock, then found sophomore Aoibhe Gormley on the left wing for a three on the next BU possession. That jumpstarted a 12-2 burst across the next three minutes.
  • BU would only miss two shots in the third quarter and nail seven of its final eight attempts. Bentley pickpocketed Simmons with 35 seconds on the timer and linked up with sophomore Bella McLaughlin in transition for a fastbreak layup to make it 63-32, the largest Terrier lead of the day.
  • One minute into the fourth quarter, freshman Channing Warren snagged an offensive board on the left block and put it back in for a layup and a foul, hitting the free throw for a three-point play and a 66-35 edge.
  • Sophomore Aina Grane Torres knocked down a right-elbow, pull-up jumper, McLaughlin converted a driving layup and freshman Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir drilled a three in front of BU's bench to cap the scoring for the day in the final 2:13.
STATS
  • The Terriers made 50.9 percent of their shots, including 8-for-16 from distance.
  • Loyola Maryland was limited to 36.5 percent shooting and was just 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) on three-point chances.
  • BU sported a 36-19 advantage in rebounds, 13 of which came on the offensive glass. Freshman Allison Schwertner paced BU with eight caroms.

  • Bentley secured a career high five steals to help BU turn the 14 Greyhound turnovers into 16 points.
