Making its first national championship game appearance in 10 years, the No. 8/3 Boston University men's ice hockey team aims for a sixth national title when it face No. 3/1 Western Michigan on Saturday (April 12) at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT

Saturday's game will be televised live on ESPN2 and streamed on ESPN+, with fans in Canada able to watch on TSN+ and TSN2. In addition, an audio-only broadcast will be located here.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU is playing in the Frozen Four for the third straight year and 25th time overall, which is tied for second with Boston College and just three behind Michigan (28).
  • This is the Terriers' 40th NCAA tournament appearance (25 in last 35 tournaments), which ranks third all-time (Minnesota has 42 and Michigan has 41). 
  • BU enters Saturday with an all-time record of 50-40-0 (.556) in NCAA tournament play.
  • The Terriers advanced to the title game with a 3-1 win over No. 12/5 Penn State.
  • Senior Jack Hughes scored the opening goal and assisted on sophomore Jack Harvey's empty-netter.
  • Freshman Cole Hutson assisted on classmate Cole Eiserman's team-leading 24th goal of the season.
  • Freshman Mikhail Yegorov made 17 of his 32 stops in the third period to earn his 11th win of the season.
  • Hutson, the National Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-American, leads all NCAA Tournament skaters with seven points (2g, 4a), including four points (1g, 3a) in the regional semifinal en route to being named Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Toledo Regional.
  • Hutson, also the Hockey East and New England Rookie of the Year, is first among NCAA rookies in both points (47) and assists (33).
  • Hutson leads all NCAA defensemen in points per game (1.24).
  • Junior Quinn Hutson has a team-best 50 points (23g, 27a) and enters Saturday tied for second in the NCAA with 1.35 points per game.
  • Q. Hutson was the overtime hero against Cornell in the regional final, scoring his 23rd goal of the season just 6:25 into the extra period.
  • BU enters Saturday ranked fourth in the NCAA and first in Hockey East on the power play (27.7%).
  • BU has also been sharp on the penalty kill during the second half of the season.
  • Since Jan. 1, the Terriers are fifth in the NCAA and first in Hockey East with an 86.8% success rate on the PK.
  • BU is 10-for-11 on the penalty kill in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Freshman Mikhail Yegorov enters Saturday ranked sixth in the nation in save percentage (.934) and has gone 7-1-1 in his last nine starts.
  • Yegorov has averaged 34.0 saves per game in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Sophomore co-captain Shane Lachance will join his father Scott (1991) and grandfather Jack Parker (1967) in playing for BU in a national title game.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Terriers and the Broncos have met just four times, with BU winning all four, including one previous meeting in the NCAA Tournament.
  • They last faced off in the 2023 NCAA regional semifinals in Manchester with BU claiming a 5-1 win.
  • That was the first meeting in 28 seasons as the Terriers posted a 5-2 win in the opening round of the Mariucci Classic on Dec. 30, 1994.
  • Head coach Jay Pandolfo was a junior on that squad, which went on to win BU's fourth national title.
  • This season, BU and WMU have had four common opponents as the Broncos went a combined 6-3 against Boston College (0-1), Michigan (1-1), North Dakota (4-1) and Massachusetts (1-0).

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS

  • Western Michigan, which has a nation-best 33 wins, won the NCHC regular-season title by 10 points before topping Denver in the conference title game in double OT.
  • The Broncos have since added three more one-goal wins to reach the national title game and they enter Saturday on a nine-game winning streak.
  • They defeated Minnesota State in OT in the regional semifinals before advancing to the Frozen Four with a 2-1 victory over UMass and adding another double-overtime triumph over Denver on Thursday.
  • WMU is in the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time and for the fourth consecutive season.
  • The Broncos boast the nation's second-best offense, averaging 3.93 goals per game.
  • Pat Ferschweiler was named both the Spencer Penrose Coach of the Year and the NCHC Coach of the Year.
  • Sophomore Alex Bump, the NCHC Forward of the Year, leads the team in both points (47) and goals (23) while classmate Grant Slukynsky (10g, 26a) and graduate student Time Washe (16g, 20a) have added 36 points apiece.
  • Freshman goaltender Hampton Slukynsky, who has started the past 12 games, sports an 18-5-1 record, a 1.90 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage.
