Softball Drops Doubleheader Battle to Kentucky

BOSTON – Hosting its first-ever SEC program, the Boston University softball team fell in the doubleheader to Kentucky on Friday afternoon.

A participant in each of the last 15 NCAA tournaments, the Wildcats (26-17) posted a combined 13-3 advantage in extra-base hits to snap the Terriers' (26-13) 43 home game unbeaten streak. BU stranded 12 on base in a 4-3 (8) game-one loss and then couldn't keep up with UK's power display in the 13-4 (5) rematch.

Sophomore Kylie Doherty led the Terriers in the lead-off slot batting 3-for-5 with four walks, three RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomores Kyomi Apalit and Libby Walsh went an identical 3-for-6 alongside two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Brooke Deppiesse recorded a team-high four hits on nine at-bats with a double, RBI and run scored.

BU used all four pitchers in the DH with junior Kasey Ricard going the distance in the first contest and finishing up with three more innings of work in the second. She recorded five strikeouts against three walks allowed.

GAME ONE: Kentucky - 4, BU - 3 (8 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Peyton Plotts started off with a two-run homer against Ricard in the first inning.
  • The Terriers threatened with Doherty (walk) and Walsh (1B) getting on base, but UK ended the threat on a strikeout and infield ground out.
  • With one out in the bottom of the second, BU recorded five straight singles with Doherty plating two and Deppiesse scoring another pull ahead, 3-2.
  • UK quickly tied the game in the third by taking advantage of a fielding error with a two-out RBI single up the middle.
  • BU had two on base with one out in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, respectively, but each time couldn't drive the ball far enough to retake the lead.
  • Utilizing three pitchers, the Wildcats led off the sixth with a double and advanced the runner to third on a fly out before Ricard earned two swinging strikeouts.
  • In the eighth, Plotts went yard a second time in the top of the eighth with one out and then helped the defense retire the side for the 4-3 victory.
GAME TWO: Kentucky - 13, BU - 4 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats scored at least one run in each of the five innings, starting off with a run in each of the first two helped by BU errors.
  • Doherty launched a 2-2 pitch to left for a lead-off homer in the bottom of the first, and sophomore Kyomi Apalit went yard as well in the second to tie the game a second time.
  • After UK made a pitching change, Doherty earned a walk and advanced to third on Deppiesse's double to set up an RBI from both Walsh and junior Megan Coyle for the 4-2 lead.
  • The Wildcats though responded with six runs off five hits, including three straight homers, in the top of the third.
  • UK added four more runs in the fourth off five hits, including two homers and a pair of doubles, with Plotts going yard a third time on the day in the fifth, as BU suffered its first run-rule loss at home since 2013.
UP NEXT
  • BU will continue the eight-game homestand by hosting UConn on Tuesday (April 15) at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Terriers have won the last eight meetings, highlighted by last year's DH sweep at UConn that featured a 6-3 victory and 1-0 (8) decision.
  • BU won the last home meeting with a 1-0 victory back in 2023 thanks in part to Ricard's one-inning save.
