No. 20 Terriers Defeat Lehigh, 12-7

BOSTON - Junior Jimmy Kohr scored four goals and senior Will Barnes made a career-high 23 saves to lead the No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 12-7 win over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU (9-4, 5-2 PL) never trailed in a game that was back-and-forth during the first half before the Terriers pulled away from Lehigh (5-8, 4-3 PL) in the second half. Lehigh scored two goals in a span of 25 seconds to cut the Terriers' lead to two early in the third quarter, but BU never allowed the Mountain Hawks to get any closer.

Barnes turned in perhaps the best performance of his impressive career on Saturday, as not only did he keep Lehigh off the board with his usual strong goalkeeping but was able to generate offense by getting the Terriers out quickly in transition on multiple occasions. His 23 stops surpassed his previous career best of 22 saves in the Terriers' 10-9 overtime win at then-No. 2/3 Army West Point on March 22.

Eight different Terriers found the back of the net on Saturday, led by Kohr's four goals. Freshman faceoff specialist Madden Murphy scored his first collegiate goal just six seconds into the contest, matching the program record for fastest goal to start a game, and also had an assist for his first career two-point day. Murphy also battled all day against Lehigh's Sean Dow, the top-ranked faceoff specialist in the conference, and won seven faceoffs to go along with three ground balls.

Senior Jimmy O'Connell recorded one goal and three assists for four points, freshman Andrew Pape notched two goals and one assist and senior Brenden Kelly tallied one goal and one assist. Sophomore Luke Davis scored his first goal of the season thanks to an assist by junior Charlie Huntley while freshman Ben Morris and sophomore Tyler Fox each had a goal.

Junior Connor Kehm tied for the team lead in ground balls with four while sophomore Logan Styles led BU with two caused turnovers. Junior Matt Freeman returned to the lineup after missing time due to injury and recorded two ground balls along with one caused turnover.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Murphy wasted no time getting the Terriers going, winning the opening draw cleanly before firing home his first collegiate goal.
  • Luke Winkler tied the game with 10:53 left in the first quarter before Morris restored the Terriers' lead just over three minutes later.
  • Lehigh evened the score with 2:38 left in the frame but BU had a last-minute man-down stand that kept the game tied heading into the second quarter.
  • That stand directly led to their third goal of the game, as BU started the second with possession and Pape capitalized just 33 seconds in.
  • O'Connell then made it 4-2 with 13:52 on the clock on a dodge from X against a short-stick defender.
  • After a defensive battle, the goals came in bunches to end the second stanza. Winkler's second of the day at 4:41 made it a 4-3 game, but Kohr responded at 3:16 to restore the Terriers' two-goal edge. Barnes began the sequence with a point-blank save before quickly outletting the ball to Davis. Davis found O'Connell, who
  • Murphy then won another faceoff cleanly and this time dished the ball to Kohr for the goal, as BU scored twice in a span of six seconds to grab a 6-3 advantage.
  • Colin French cut the deficit to 6-4 but Pape sent the Terriers to the locker room with a three-goal lead with his second strike of the day.
  • Kelly scored a man-up goal just 35 seconds into the third quarter to push the lead to 8-4, but Lehigh responded with two straight goals to make it an 8-6 game.
  • Then, with 4:41 left, Barnes once again got the Terriers out in transition, with Huntley feeding Davis for an uncontested goal.
  • Fox opened the fourth quarter with his seventh goal of the season off a terrific assist from O'Connell, who took a hit as he made the pass.
  • Winkler completed his hat trick with 11:12 to go, but Kohr added two goals, including another in transition from Kehm, to create the 12-7 final.
