Army West Point Outlasts Softball in Extra Innings, 6-5

BOSTON – Facing a three-run deficit with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Boston University softball team rallied to tie the game but ultimately came up short to Army West Point, 6-5, in a nine-inning affair Sunday afternoon.

With their streak of consecutive Patriot League series wins halted at 15, the Terriers (29-15, 10-2 PL) fall into a tie with the Black Knights (27-20, 10-2 PL) atop the standings. Both squads now just have two weekend series remaining.

Junior Megan Coyle delivered the clutch hit on a bases-clearing double to finish the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Both freshman Camryn Lyons and sophomore Livia Christopher also collected two hits apiece, while junior Brooke Deppiesse scored two runs following a single and hit-by-pitch before having to leave the game due to injury.

In the circle, junior Kasey Ricard (20-9) went the distance totaling nine strikeouts against 11 hits and one walk with the defense committing two costly errors. Relieving Katelyn Flanders in the bottom of the sixth with the game tied, Breanna Izzo (13-8) retired all 10 Terriers she faced to earn the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army started strong with back-to-back one-out singles, but Ricard earned a pair of fly outs to keep the game scoreless.
  • For the second consecutive day with two outs, Lyons earned an RBI single to put the Terriers on the scoreboard first after Coyle advanced Deppiesse (hit-by-pitch) to third on a single.
  • The Black Knights threatened again in the third on a lead-off single and double that led to an RBI bunt but left two in scoring position after Ricard recorded two strikeouts and caught a hard liner directed toward her face.
  • BU quickly responded in the bottom half with Deppiesse doubling down the right field line and scoring on freshman Kieren McHugh's one-out RBI single.
  • In the fourth, Army broke open the game with four runs off three hits, a misplayed sac bunt attempt and a double steal to move ahead, 5-2.
  • The Terriers stranded three combind runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings before mounting a rally during the sixth.
  • After sophomore Kyomi Apalit and Christopher led off with back-to-back singles, classmate Sophie Naivar loaded the bases to set up Coyle's three-run double to right center to tie the game, 5-5.
  • While the defense kept BU off the bases the final three innings, Army's offense had a single in both the seventh and eighth innings.
  • During the ninth, the Black Knights led off with a single and advanced the runner to second on a ground out before the Terriers misplayed a sac bunt with an errant throw toward first to score the game's final run.
UP NEXT
  • BU will conclude the homestand on Tuesday (April 22) at 4 p.m. against Ivy League leader Harvard.
  • The Terriers lead the all-time series, 30-15, after earning a 9-5 road victory in 2024.
  • Two years ago, BU swept a home doubleheader, 5-4 (8) and 3-1 (5).
