
No. 15/18 Terriers Defeated at Yale, 16-11

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Timothy Shannehan recorded six points but the No. 15/18 Boston University men's lacrosse team was defeated at Yale, 16-11, on Saturday at Reese Stadium.
BU (2-2) trailed Yale (2-1) by as many as seven in the first half, but the Terriers never quit and twice got within four in the second half, but Yale used a three-goal run late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The Terriers scored two quick goals with under 2:00 remaining in regulation to make it 16-11 and had a chance to cut into the lead again, but Yale got the stop it needed to successfully run out the clock.
Sophomore midfielders Mike Rooney and Andrew Pape each had one goal, two assists and three ground balls while senior Jimmy Kohr and freshman Peyton Forte tallied two goals apiece. Sophomore Finn Lawrence also had two points thanks to one goal and one assist as he helped the Terriers' man-up unit go 4-for-6. BU outshot Yale, 49-36, but Yale goalkeeper Ben Friedman made 21 saves for the Bulldogs.
The Terriers caused 18 turnovers and held Yale to a 16-of-25 performance in the clearing game. Junior SSDM Luke Davis had a career day, recording five caused turnovers and collecting two ground balls. Junior Logan Styles notched three caused turnovers and two ground balls while sophomore Murphy McLaughlin had two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore Madden Murphy went 11-for-19 at the faceoff X with five ground balls. Sophomore Connor Phillips made 10 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yale scored the first four goals of the game to take a 4-0 lead with 8:02 left in the first quarter.
- BU cashed in on its first EMO of the day when Forte collected a Shannehan feed at the crease and finished.
- The teams then traded goals to end the quarter, with Rooney cutting the Yale lead to 5-2.
- As they did in the first frame, the Bulldogs scored the opening four goals of the second quarter to take a 9-2 lead.
- Shannehan willed the Terriers back into the game with a pair of goals, first on a man-up chance with 3:39 left.
- Then, after McLaughlin picked off a Yale pass, Shannehan scored in transition to make it a 9-4 game at the break.
- It was a back-and-forth affair to start the third quarter, as the teams traded goals through the opening eight minutes.
- BU shrunk the Yale lead to 11-7 with 5:44 left thanks to another Shannehan goal, but Yale answered with two straight goals of its own to regain a six-goal advantage.
- Kohr made it a 13-8 game entering the fourth quarter and Shannehan scored another man-up marker to make it 13-9 with 12:18 to play.
- Friedman continued to keep the Terriers from getting any closer with his stong play in the cage and Yale scored three straight goals to make it 16-9 with 4:46 remaining.
- BU kept pushing and made it interesting late, as Forte scored and then Kohr followed off the ensuing faceoff win by freshman Mike Ramirez to make it a 16-11 game with 1:47 to play.
- Ramirez won the ensuing faceoff but the Terriers were unable to solve Friedman on two additional chances.
- This was the third straight game that BU forced nine or more failed clears.
- The Terriers entered the day averaging 40 ground balls per game and finished the day with 44.
- Shannehan has recorded 86 points (45g, 41a) in his first 20 games as a Terrier.
- Kohr has scored a goal in 20 straight games and has notched at least two points in all 20 of those contests.
- BU will begin Patriot League play on Saturday, Feb. 28, when the Terriers host Navy at Nickerson Field.
- Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
