MILAN - Five former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts led the United States to Olympic gold on Sunday as Team USA defeated Canada, 2-1, in overtime of Sunday's gold-medal game.
Jack Eichel, Clayton Keller, Charlie McAvoy, Jake Oettinger and Brady Tkachuk became the first Terrier men to win Olympic gold 46 years to the day after Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione, Jack O'Callahan and Dave Silk helped lead Team USA to its thrilling Miracle on Ice upset of the Soviet Union. A Terrier has been part of all three American gold medalists at the Olympics, as Dick Rodenhiser was part of the 1960 champions.
In addition to the five skaters, the Team USA coaching staff and management group was full of Terrier alumni. Head coach Mike Sullivan was joined on the bench by assistant coaches John Hynes and David Quinn. Chris Drury and Chris Kelleher were part of the management group that helped select the team.
BU was the only school to boast a gold and silver medalist in men's ice hockey, as 2024 Hobey Baker Award winner Macklin Celebrini won silver with Canada. The 19-year-old Celebrini was outstanding all tournament, leading all skaters with five goals and finishing second in points (10) behind only Connor McDavid.
For the Americans, Eichel totaled six points (2g, 4a) and was a plus-5. Tkachuk was a plus-7 and recorded five points on three goals and two assists. McAvoy averaged 19:29 of ice time, second most on Team USA.
In all, eight Terriers claimed medals in Italy as the women's side saw Marie-Philip Poulin (Canada) and Andrea Brändli (Switzerland) earn silver and bronze, respectively. Poulin was named the tournament's top forward by the IIHF while Brändli was tabbed the top goaltender.
Poulin became the all-time leading goal scorer in Olympic history when she scored her 18th and 19th in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Brändli and Switzerland in the semifinals. Brändli recorded 114 saves on 117 shots in the playoff rounds as the Swiss team topped Sweden, 2-1, in overtime in the bronze-medal game.
The gold-medal game resulted in a 2-1 overtime win for Team USA over Canada and Poulin became just the fourth hockey player to earn five Olympic medals.
