Hutson, McCarthy Named Hockey East All-Stars
March 13, 2026 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Sophomore Cole Hutson and junior captain Gavin McCarthy were named Hockey East All-Stars, the league announced on Friday.
Paired together on defense for the majority of the season, Hutson and McCarthy have proven to be the league's top defensive pairing throughout the entire season. Hutson was chosen as a First Team All-Star for the second straight season while McCarthy, who was runner-up for Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman, earned Third Team All-Star accolades for the first time in his career.
Hutson is the fifth Terrier defenseman to be named a Hockey East First Team All-Star in two straight years and he's the second league defenseman (after his brother Lane) to receive first-team accolades as both a freshman and a sophomore. He is tied for first among all league defenders with 32 points (10g, 22a) while his 10 goals is first among all Hockey East blue liners. Hutson is just the seventh NCAA defenseman since 2004-05 to record two straight seasons with 10+ goals and 22+ assists. A plus-14 this season, Hutson played in all situations for the Terriers and is second in Hockey East in average time on ice at 25:37 per contest. He is tied for first in the country among defensemen in game-winning goals with four and has generated 145 shots on goal. Hutson has been particularly good down the stretch, as he has totaled seven points (2g, 5a) in the last five games to help BU go 4-1-0 in that stretch.
McCarthy has enjoyed his finest season as a Terrier as a junior, playing in all 35 games. He has recorded career highs in goals (4), assists (17), points (21), shots on goal (70) and plus-minus (+14) while averaging 25:02 of ice time, which is third in Hockey East. McCarthy is eighth in Hockey East with 57 blocked shots, including an impressive nine in a 3-2 win over Maine on Feb. 6. Like Hutson, McCarthy has played his best hockey in the most important time of year. He enters Saturday's quarterfinal game on a three-game point streak and has notched nine points (2g, 7a) in the last eight games, including two assists in Wednesday's opening-round win over Vermont. McCarthy has missed just one game during his three seasons at BU, totaling eight goals and 34 assists for 42 points in 112 appearances.
