Grant Cartwright is entering his second year as the director of track & field and cross country and his seventh season leading the throws program, where he has coached the group to unprecedented success.

Since arriving at BU, Cartwright has led both the men's and women's throwers to their first national squad rankings in shot put, discus, hammer and weight throw. The program's top-10 lists for all throwing events have been nearly rewritten during Cartwright's tenure, including a school record in the weight throw.

A former four-time All-American at Michigan, Cartwright joined the BU staff in 2019 following one season as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

In 2024-25, Cartwright was named Patriot League indoor women's coach of the year after he oversaw a women's program that won its first Patriot League indoor championship since 2016 and finished second at the Patriot League cross country championships and the outdoor championships. During that season, Vera Sjöberg qualified for the NCAA Championships in the cross country, indoor and outdoor seasons and earned three All-America nods. On the men's side, the Terriers finished third at each of the cross country, indoor and outdoor conference championships.

Cartwright has led Ellie Roan, Kiana Lino and Owen Faulha to individual titles at Patriot League Championships and has coached five others to podium finishes. In 2022, Lino became the Terriers' first thrower in 19 years to qualify for NCAA Regionals. Roan and Cole Tucker were NCAA Regional participants in 2024 and in 2025, Roan and Faulha each made NCAA Regional appearances. The women's weight throwers achieved a peak national ranking of 11th during the 2024 season.

During his collegiate career at Michigan, Cartwright was a three-time USATF Championships Qualifier, a USTFCCCA first-team All-American in the indoor weight throw in 2017 and a second-team All-American in both the indoor weight throw and the outdoor shot put in 2018. He was the NCAA runner-up in the weight throw in 2017.

In 2017, Cartwright won the Big Ten Indoor Championship in the weight throw, was named the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and received Honorable Mention All-America honors in the shot put. Additionally, in 2019, he was the only male thrower to qualify in multiple events at the USATF Championships.

A Big 10 Sportsmanship Award winner, Cartwright was voted team captain by his teammates at Michigan in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and was named team MVP in 2017. At the end of his collegiate career, only one other thrower in NCAA history had higher personal bests in the hammer, weight throw, shot put and discus.

Cartwright, who has served as a camp and clinic director for a decade, also has USTFCCCA certification as both a strength & conditioning and jumps specialist.

The Powell, Ohio, native graduated from Michigan in 2018 with a bachelor of science degree in biopsychology, cognition & neuroscience with a special interest in motor learning and was a multiple-time Scholar-Athlete Award recipient.

Cartwright resides in Charlestown with his wife, Ali Torrence, and is currently working towards a master's in business administration from the Questrom School of Business.
