Freshman heavyweight Rich Wilson (Coldwater, MI) and freshman 125-pounder Jose Leon (Santa Ana, CA) were named ECWA Wrestler of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for all action from February 1-7.
Wilson, a red-shirt freshman, earned the award by virtue of pinning all three of his opponents, recording a 3-0 record for the week. It marked the second consecutive week that a league honor has been bestowed upon Wilson. He was named ECWA Rookie of the Week on February 1 after making his collegiate debut on January 29 by pinning Army's Bill Baird at 1:47 en route to a 24-16 Terrier win.
The heavyweight commenced the week on Friday, February 4 on "The Roof" by pinning Mike Carroll of Drexel University just 37 seconds into the second round. Entering Wilson's match, the Terriers were trailing Drexel 9-3. However, Wilson's pin notched six points for B.U., tying the score at 9-9. The Terriers outscored Drexel 10-6 over the final five matches to register a 19-15 victory.
Two days later, B.U. traveled to Staten Island, NY for a three-team dual meet against ECWA foes Wagner and Sacred Heart. Wilson began the day by pinning Wagner's Harry Marquez just 2:34 into the match, pacing the Terriers in their 57-0 triumph.
Later in the afternoon, Wilson capped off his perfect week by pinning Sacred Heart's Brian Moore at 2:05 in the 39-6 B.U. victory. The win improved the heavyweight's record to 4-0 with all of his wins coming by way of pin.
Head coach Carl Adams says of Wilson, "Rich has been a real pleasant surprise. The fact that he is pinning his opponents has been a real plus and a motivational factor for the team."
Leon, the top-rated 125-pound wrestler in the ECWA, posted three victories last week with two pins and a major decision, and now has four pins for the season. The victories raised Leon's record to a team-best 15-2 overall, 10-1 in dual meets, and 5-0 in the ECWA. He also earned Rookie of the Week honors on January 26.
Leon began the week on Friday, February 4 by earning a 14-4 major decision over Drexel's Dan DiGirolamo. Leading 10-4 with only seconds remaining in the match, Leon scored a two-point takedown and followed with a two-point near fall to record the mandatory eight-point lead for a major decision.
The freshman 125-pounder completed his impressive week on Sunday, February 6 by registering pins against Wagner's Kam Chang at 3:39 and Sacred Heart's Jon Lee (3:25).
Adams speaks extremely highly of Leon, saying, "Jose has been absolutely fantastic. Already he has shown himself to be potentially one of the best we have ever had. On top of it, he is doing really well in the classroom and is a great kid."
