BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling Terriers earned a 33-12 non-conference win over Harvard at Case Gym on Saturday, Feb. 19. It was the final regular-season match for the Terriers.
B.U. (10-6, 5-4 Colonial Athletic Association ) put the match securely in the win column when junior Greg Politi (East Hanover, N.J.) earned a 5-2 win over Billy Colgan at 184, giving the Terriers an insurmountable 27-9 lead with three matches remaining. Sophomore John DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass.) followed with an impressive pin of Andrew Dane at 197. DaCruz needed only 18 seconds to post the victory, his team-leading 12th pin of the season. The 18-second win, which gave B.U. a 33-9 lead, was the quickest of his 12 pins.
The Terriers began the match by earning a quick six points after a Harvard forfeit at 125. Sophomore Brett Frimer (Marboro, N.J.) then earned a 9-8 decision over the Crimson's Brent Kakesako at 133. Harvard got on the board when Michael Baria blanked Terrier freshman Joey Whitaker (Queensbury, N.Y.), 16-0, at 141.
Dominic DeNunzio evened the score at 9-9 with a 12-4 major decision over Chris Coppolo (Groton, Conn.) at 149. B.U. took the lead for good after a 7-2 victory by junior Justin Blumenthal (Madison, Wis.) over Matt Button at 157.
Junior Zach Johns (Owings Mills, Md.) pushed the B.U. advantage to 18-9 with a pin of Nathan Picarsic at 165. A Crimson forfeit at 174 made the score 24-9 in favor of the Terriers.
The win evens the all-time series between B.U. and Harvard at 16-16.
B.U. hosts the 2005 CAA Wrestling Championship on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.
