BOSTON - The Boston University softball team swept a doubleheader from Stony Brook, picking up a 6-4 victory in Game 1 and a 5-2 win in Game 2. With the wins, the Terriers improve to 23-16-1 on the season and 12-4 in America East play, while the Seawolves fell to 19-31 and 9-9.

In Game 1, the Seawolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Kristen Brust in the top of the first inning.

B.U. answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Brandi Shields (Schererville, Ind.) reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a single by DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.). Chiya Louie (Seattle, Wash.), who also singled, scored on a sacrifice fly by Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.).

The Terriers added to their lead in the second as pitcher Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christy King (Albuquerque, N.M.). Tyler Benson (Tucson, Ariz.) followed with a ground ball to the pitcher, who threw the ball away at third, allowing Freeman to score and Benson to move up to second. Jamie Haas (Houston, Tex.) singled and moved to second on the throw, advancing Benson to third. Jenny Shields (Simi Valley, Calif.) then hit a sharp grounder to third, but Stony Brook's Rachael Vogl couldn't come up with it, allowing Benson to score to make it 4-1. Louie squeezed home Haas from third and BU led 5-1.

Williams cracked a line drive solo home run over the left centerfield wall to lead off the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-1. The Seawolves rallied in the top of the sixth capped by back-to-back home runs by Hayler Durham and Suzanne Turek to cut the lead to 6-4. Durham's homer, a two-run shot, came after freshman Jenna Grapensteter (Bothell, Was.) came on in relief of Freeman.

Marissa Servello led off the seventh with a single for Stony Brook, but Grapensteter settled down to get the last three outs to earn the save.

Freeman (10-8) earned the victory, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking two over 5.1 innings. Grapensteter pitched the final 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits while striking out two. Angela Andrews (5-18) took the loss after allowing six runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out five and walking none.

In the nightcap, the Terriers struck early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning fueled by a two-run homer by Alley to lead 4-0. B.U. stretched its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth when King singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Benson and scored on a single through the right side by Brandi Shields.

Stony Brook got on the board in the fifth on a two-run homer by Durham to make it 5-2, but that's as close as it would get.

Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) (7-6) picked up the victory, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 10. Sarah Hoffman (10-12) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits before being chased with two outs in the first.

The Terriers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to take on UMass at 5:00 p.m.
