BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season when it was edged, 1-0, by Hartford on Thursday evening at Nickerson Field. The Hawks netted the game-winning goal in the 56th minute and withstood the Terriers' offensive pressure for the remaining 34 minutes, as BU falls to 7-6-2 overall and 4-1-0 in America East action. Hartford improves to 5-5-4 overall and 3-0-2 in AE play.

In a back and forth first half, where both teams were evenly matched, the Terriers and Hawks played solid defense on both ends of the field. Hartford's back line played high causing four offsides in the first half, while its offense recorded six shots. Senior Christina Reuter (Madison, Wis.) made one save in the first half to maintain the tie.

Sophomore Farrell McClernon (West Chester, Pa.) had the Terriers' best scoring opportunity of the first stanza with a low, hard shot to the far right corner that went just wide of the post.

To start the second half, Hartford came out pressing and took the one-goal lead on a perfect feed from Laura Guigli to Sara Flowers, who turned with the ball and placed it into the lower, right corner.

BU began to threaten with aggressive play in the offensive third and were rewarded with a golden opportunity when they earned an indirect kick in the 70th minute, however, Hartford's defensive wall cleared it out of danger.

The Terriers continued to bring the ball forward and feed passes into the 18-yard box, however, Hartford goalkeeper Liz Cook came off her line to cut off the crosses. McClernon put the Terriers final shot on goal in the 86th minute, as she redirected a cross from the left side, but, Cook made a goal-line save that preserved the lead.

Hartford held the 10-7 advantage in shots and the 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

BU will travel to Stony Brook on Sunday, Oct. 21 for a 1:00 p.m. against the Seawolves.
