BOSTON - The Boston University men's tennis team pulled out a come-from-behind victory against America East rival Binghamton University, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers improved their overall record to 9-8 by winning the final three matches against the conference-leading Bearcats.
This marks the first time in the all-time series Boston University has beaten Binghamton.
"I'm extremely proud of our guys today," coach Rocky Jarvis said. "We believed in ourselves and knew that we could play on their level. Most of all, I'm happy for all the players because their hard work is paying off and they are showing people that they can do some great things."
Senior Barrett Wolf (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the way for the Terriers by easily defeating Binghamton's Faisal Mohamed, 6-2, 6-2. Coming into the match, Mohamed had been undefeated in America East play. With his victory, Wolf improved his flawless conference record to 4-0 on the season.
"Barrett's victory today is career-defining," Jarvis declared. "He's been a rock at number singles for so long, and he's proving to people that he's one of, if not the best, player in the America East."
The Terriers lost a tightly-contested doubles point as junior Jared Kobren (Longboat Key, Fla.) and freshman Jeff Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill.) dropped the deciding third doubles match, 9-8 (5). Wolf and junior Giulio Gallarotti (Higganum, Conn.) lost at No. 1 doubles, while in second doubles senior co-captain Ross Lohr (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Charles Weinstein (New Rochelle, N.Y.) picked up BU's lone victory, 8-6.
With Binghamton winning 3-1 and only three matches remaining, BU seized the momentum and never looked back. At fourth singles, Kobren repeatedly came through in clutch situations and battled his way to a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Jon Bonnent. In fifth singles, Chudacoff continued his stellar play, employing a variety of shots to keep his opponent off balance. Chudacoff's 6-3, 6-2 victory extended his undefeated streak in America East play to 4-0.
After Chudacoff's victory evened the score, the entire match rested on Lohr's shoulders. He was steady, winning the first set 6-0. Serving for the match at 5-4 in the second, Lohr calmly put his opponent away, winning 6-0, 6-4.
"Nothing like this has ever happened in my four years of BU tennis," Lohr said. "This is a huge accomplishment and I'm proud of every single guy on this team. Now we have to prepare ourselves and get ready to make it to the NCAAs."
