Boston University cross country runners took first-place in the men's and women's races on Saturday at the Ted Owens Invitational at Central Connecticut College. Senior Andrea Walkonen (17:06) and sophomore Eric Ashe (25:42) crossed first in their respective races, with Terrier teammates following close behind. However, the men's side finished third in overall scoring and the women's team placed fourth.
The women's team finished fourth with 100 points in the 5k race, behind Quinnipiac (47), Connecticut (77) and New Hampshire (90), while edging out Sacred Heard (124), Monmouth (138), Rhode Island (199), Wagner (213), Central Connecticut (231), New Haven (287), Fairfield (331), Fairleigh Dickinson (375) and St. Francis (384).
Walkonen had her second first-place finish in the first two races of the young season, each time beating the closest competitor by a large margin. After winning her race last Friday by one minute and 17 seconds, Walkonen finished this week's event 25 seconds ahead of Quinnipiac's Kristen Stevens. Freshman Emma Reed (17:52) had her second third-place finish of the season and sophomore Sarah Mosser (18:16) had her second fifth-place finish of the season. Junior Katie Weider (19:43), freshman Courtney Gardner (20:07) and freshman Katie Bauler (21:17) also finished for Boston University.
The men's side had impressive finishes with Ashe and senior David Proctor (26:07) finishing first and second. However, strong showings by Quinnipiac (49) and Sacred Heart (71) pushed Boston University (82) into third place overall. The Terriers finished ahead of Mount St. Mary's (101), Monmouth (118), Wagner 137, Central Connecticut (167), New Haven (171), Fairfield (277) and St. Francis (294).
Senior Albert Crooker (27:15) finished 20th and senior teammate Jake LaRoe (27:33), freshman Ken Halton (27:47), junior Tom McLean (28:15) and freshman
James Weider (28:29) finished soon thereafter. Proctor's second-place finish was his second of the season in as many races, while Ashe's first-place finish in the 8k race followed a third place finish last Friday.
BU's next race will be the New England Championships at Franklin Park on Oct. 6.
