BOSTON -
Sophomore Emily Pallotta's fifth-minute tally gave the Boston University women's soccer team its first victory of the season as the Terriers handed Princeton a 1-0 loss on the final day of the Doubletree Guest Suites Boston Terrier Invitational. Red-shirt freshman Janie Reilly got her first collegiate start in net, recording three saves for the shutout. BU improves to 1-1-0, while the Tigers drop to 0-2-0 on the young season.
Pallotta (Andover, Mass.) gave the Terriers the early lead with a goal at 4:28. Freshman Lina Cords (Leonardtown, Md.) took the restart on the far left side and lobbed it into the box where an on-running Pallotta chipped it over Princeton goalkeeper Maren Dale for her first goal of the season.
Senior Lauren Basham (Lake Oswego, Ore.) had a shot go just high of the net near the 20-minute mark. Sophomore Farrell McClernon (West Chester, Pa.) fed a pass to Basham, who then turned and went one on one with Dale, however, her chip went just high of the cross bar.
In the second half, Princeton began to mount its comeback, however, the BU defense kept its form and did not let the Tigers get in the box. Reilly was tested in the 50th minute when Princeton's Marissa Sampias unloaded a shot from 30 yards out that forced Reilly to making a leaping save and push the ball just over the cross bar.
For the remainder of the game the back four locked it in and held the Tigers to two shots and one on goal.
With 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Princeton generated on last opportunity for the game-tying goal, however, Cords made a crucial stop at the top of the box that cleared the ball out of danger.
The Terriers will return to action next weekend in the Wisconsin Invitational when they will take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and host Wisconsin on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
