San Jose, Calif. - The Boston University softball team improved to 5-1 on the young season with a sweep of Sacramento State on Sunday (March 1). Senior Shayne Lotito drove in the Terriers' two runs in their 2-0 victory over the Hornets in game two, while junior Cassidi Hardy picked up the complete-game shutout in the circle. In the first game of the afternoon, BU defeated the defending Pacific Coast Softball Conference champions, 5-3, backed by senior Melissa Dubay, who had two hits and two RBI.

Through two games, Lotito hit .500 with three RBI and two stolen bases, while Dubay was 3-for-7 with two RBI. Hardy threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout in the second contest with three strikeouts to lower her season ERA to 0.91 and improve to 2-1 on the season. Sophomore Kelley Engman earned the victory in the circle in the first game and improved to 1-0.

In the first game, the Terriers enjoyed a four-run advantage heading into the sixth inning when the Hornets made a comeback, plating two runs on a double to right center. BU tacked on one more in the sixth for insurance on a single to left field by Dubay, which brought home sophomore April Setterlund. In the top of the seventh, Sacramento State made one last attempt at a comeback, moving one runner across the plate, but a play at third base recorded the final out and secured the two-run victory.

In the second game, the Terriers and Hornets found themselves in a stalemate until the third inning when Lotito stepped to the plate to plate the game-winning run on a single to right center field. The senior outfielder tacked one more on the scoreboard in the fifth with an RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Hardy retired all three batters in order to extend BU's winning streak to five games.

The Terriers will return to action on Friday (March 6) at the USF Under Armour Invitational. In the three-day invite, BU will first play Villanova and Western Michigan on Friday afternoon before taking on Robert Morris on Saturday morning.
