CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Senior Mike Roberts is one win away from his second conference title and five other Boston University wrestlers are still competeing in their respective consolation brackets after the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Oscar Smith High School.

Five Terriers advanced to the semifinals with quarterfinal victories, but Roberts was the only one to advance to Saturday's championship round.

Juniors Ryan Buff (133) and C.J. Inglin (165), freshman Hunter Meys (174) and sophomore John Hall (184) all fell in the semifinal round, but need just one win in Saturday's first session to reach the third-place bout in their respective weight classes.

Junior Ben Mandelbraut (157) is also alive despite falling in the quarterfinals thanks to a win in the first round of the wrestlebacks.

Roberts, the top seed at 149, had to pull off two narrow decisions to reach the finals. The senior earned a 4-3 victory over Brandon Bucher (George Mason) in the quarterfinals before defeating fourth-seeded Matt Kaylor (Binghamton), 5-3.

Third-seeded Meys edged sixth-seeded Mike Ward of Rider, 1-0, before falling in a 9-3 decision to George Mason's Bagna Tovuujav in the semifinals. After a dominiating 15-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals, John Hall fell to Drexel's Jon Oplinger, 6-4, in overtime.

The day got off to a great start for the Terriers, as Buff and Inglin pulled off upsets in the quarterfinals. Buff, the No. 6 seed, pinned third-seeded Denny Herndon (George Mason) at 2:36 and Inlgin, another No. 6 seed, recorded a 10-4 victory over No. 3-seed Jason Lapham of Rider.

Buff was pinned by second-seeded Kyle Hutter of Old Dominion in the first period of their semifinal match and Inglin put up a tough fight against Ryan Patrovich of Hofstra, another No. 2 seed, before coming up short, 5-2.

Four Terriers - freshman Ryan Dowd (125), junior Abbie Rush (141), junior Carmen Rondash (184) and senior Jim Connors (285) - dropped both of their matches on the day and had their seasons come to an end.
