BOSTON - Despite three players in double figures, the Boston University women's basketball team (1-3) dropped a 69-58 decision to crosstown foe Harvard (3-1) on Tuesday night at Case Gym.
Alford, the America East Player of the Game, was 8-for-11 from the field and dished out five assists to go along with her game-high 18-point performance. Junior Caroline Stewart added 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while junior Alex Young chipped in 11 points with four steals. Senior Kerry Cashman hauled in a game-high 10 boards as she reached the 300-rebound mark for her career.
As a team, BU struggled from the field shooting 35.8 percent from the floor - 25.0 percent in the first half alone. The Terriers got 30 of their 59 points in the paint, and 21 came off turnovers as they caused 26 Harvard miscues. However, 50 percent field goal shooting and 19 points from the Harvard bench made the difference.
To begin the game, the Terriers and Crimson played a close, back-and-forth game at a fast pace and five minutes into the game, BU owned a slim, 9-7 advantage. However, a 9-0 run gave Harvard seven-point advantage, 16-9 - one that it did not relinquish the rest of the stanza.
In the first half, the Crimson built a lead as large as 13 points, but a 6-0 spurt, which included a trey by Alford and a layup from Cashman reduced the deficit to seven points, 29-22. A Crimson jumper with 15 seconds remaining rounded out the first-half scoring at 31-22.
In the second half, Stewart scored BU's first six points as it drew to within eight points, 34-26, at 18:55. The Terriers also capitalized on a handful of Harvard miscues to get as close as three points, 45-42, with 10:44 remaining, however, Harvard would go on another few runs - extending its lead to as much as 16 points, 67-51, with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Terriers did not relent, but as time expired they were only able to reduce the deficit to 11, 69-58.
BU will next head to the Long Island Turkey Classic on Friday (Nov. 26) and Saturday (Nov. 27). On Friday, BU will face off with Colgate at 4 p.m., and either McNeese State or LIU on Saturday.
