BOSTON - For the second consecutive year, the Boston University men's tennis team and Colgate battled to the very end, but the Red Raiders came out the victor again with a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Track and Tennis Center. Three of the six singles matches went to three sets, as the Terriers drop to 1-3 on the season.

BU worked hard to earn the doubles point by winning two of the three contests. Phil Bernasek/Harry Jewett defeated Bill Kring and Alex Green, 8-4, at No. 2, but Jeff Chudacoff and Jeff Friedman tied it up with an 8-5 win over John Nogueras/Harry Jewett at No. 1.

In the No. 3 doubles match, freshmen Marcus Vanberkel and Alex Hallenbeck went to a tiebreaker and made the shots when needed to defeat Michale Yassky/John Beam, 9-8(7-5).

Colgate took the lead with Alec Goldstein defeating Hallenbeck, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 and Yassky knocking off Friedman, 7-5, 6-4.

The BU seniors stepped up their game and responded with two victories. Chudacoff tied it up at two apiece in the top singles match by winning the first-set tie breaker and then the second in easier fashion for the 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Bernasek. James Bernstein rallied from a set down to send the No. 5 singles match to a third-set tie breaker. Both he and Sean Spillberg batlled back and forth with Bernstein coming out the victor at 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

The Terriers won the first set in the No. 3 and 6 matches, but Colgate came from behind to earn the singles points and the team victory. John Nogueras defeated Bill Kring, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, and Harry Jewett earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Vanberkel.

Following its first one-point loss of the season after recording three last year, BU will next travel to Boston College on Sunday (Feb. 14) for a 4 p.m. start time.
